Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Crystal Palace Souvenir Varnished Front 1937 Crystal Palace Souvenir Varnished Front 1937 40 - These cards were issued following the disastrous fire in November 1936 which destroyed this famous London landmark and the informative text on the reverse tells us that although the fire was attended by sixty-five fire engines and six hundred firemen they could not save the building. The last couple of cards picture the charred remains, but the set begins with a picture of the extraordinary building designed by Sir Joseph Paxton which was erected in Hyde Park. The wonderful glass structure, nicknamed the ‘Crystal Palace’, was home to the Great Exhibition of 1851 which showcased exhibits from around the world as well as British manufacturing talent and a host of entertainment. Following the success of this Exhibition when it was over the decision was taken to move the building from Hyde Park to land at Sydenham and it was re-erected there in 1852 where it became a place of entertainment where people visited to view displays, listen to concerts, watch fire-works or football etc. This set pictures in black and white interesting rooms, some of the entertainments, foreign visitors and some of the ups and downs of its long history. There is plenty of information on the card backs making this a worthy souvenir. These cards have a varnished front, but a matt front version was also issued in 1936. Size 66 x 37mm

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of Interest 2nd Series 1938 Views of Interest 2nd Series 1938 L48 - Britain’s turbulent history has left us with a rich legacy of castles. Their story provides a fascinating insight into the wars and power-struggles this country has endured down through the centuries and there is no better presentation of these amazing structures than the 48 castles featured in this set. Nowadays most are open to the public, so let’s have a quick look at some – Norwich with its magnificent Norman keep houses a wonderful museum, Lancaster (a goal until a few years ago), Dover (a landmark for travellers from the continent), Nottingham (familiar to collectors as the John Player trademark), Tintagel (with its Arthurian connections), Taunton (re-opened as an award winning museum) and Windsor (now fully restored following that terrible fire). This set of hand-coloured photos issued in 1938 is highly recommended. Size 82 x 63mm
