Gallaher Military & Armed Forces The Navy 1937 Issued by Gallaher back The Navy 1937 Issued by Gallaher back 48 - When this set was reviewed in “Cigarette Card News in 1937 it was described as “a most interesting issue covering practically every phase of the Navy’s activities, both as regards personnel and material. Examples of battleships, cruisers, aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines and various small craft are given as well as numerous scenes depicting the routine of a seaman’s life” and indeed it is the behind the scenes look at the sailors’ lives which make this set so appealing. It was issued at a time when Britain was gearing up for the war that was to come and just three years later H.M.S. Warspite, pictured mooring on card no. 25 and in heavy seas on card no. 48, was in action at Narvik inflicting great damage on shore installations and sinking German ships. Then in May 1941 came the tragic demise of the battle cruiser Hood which was sunk by the Bismarck. There were only three survivors from the crew of 1,400. The Navy had its revenge when aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm (card 44) disabled the Bismarck’s rudder and the crippled ship was sunk by torpedoes from H.M.S. Dorsetshire. There is plenty of information on the card backs which have the company name at the bottom, but the set was also produced with ‘Park Drive Cigarettes’ at the bottom. Cards size 63 x 37mm.

Carreras Military & Armed Forces Our Navy (Thin Card) 1937 Our Navy (Thin Card) 1937 50 - These cards picture almost every type of ship in service in 1937 and when reviewed in our magazine at the time the reviewer described them as “the first series exclusively devoted to the Navy in a very long time and most welcome”. These were packed with the firm’s “Gib” brand cigarettes and contain excellent colour pictures with plenty of text about the vessel on the numbered backs. Amongst the craft covered are the submarines H.M.S. Narwhal, Porpoise and Pandora, Naval flying boats, the turrets of H.M.S Hood, H.M.S. Victory the most famous ship in the world, a Mining Tender, H.M.S Royal Sovereign, aircraft carriers H.M.S Courageous and Glorious, H.M.S Rodney, H.M.S. Iron Duke a survivor of WWI, survey ship H.M.S. Flinders, repair ship H.M.S Resource, destroyer H.M.S Comet and hospital ship H.M.S. Maine. Some of the more well-known vessels appear on more than one card in the set with different pictures and adjusted text. Sadly with war already on the horizon when this was issued it would not be long before the Navy would be put to the test and many of these fine vessels would be destroyed. Selected numbers from this set were also produced as a set of 20 on thicker card. An excellent set with cards size 68 x 36mm
