Museum Series Sydney Issue 1927
Issuer: Sarony
Condition: Very Good to Excellent
* These are original and NOT reprints
Description: This set contains black and white pictures of items from the British and London Museums with detailed descriptions on the card backs. The first card pictures the grand edifice of the British Museum then includes items such as the Elgin Marbles, the Rosetta Stone which provided invaluable clues to deciphering the writings of ancient Egypt, the First Folio of the works of William Shakespeare, Greek Jury Tickets, masks from Sri Lanka etc. Card 18 pictures the old London Museum (which in more recent years amalgamated with other London collections to form the Museum of London near the Barbican) and some of its artefacts such as the remains of a Roman Galley, a model of the Old London Bridge in 1603, early fire-fighting appliances, tally sticks, Roman lights and London apprentice relics. There are two holes punched on the left-hand side of the cards and the backs tell us that once you collected a set you could forward these and the company would bind them into an artistic cover at no cost. This particular set is the large size and was issued in Australia with the address to send them for binding listed as ‘P.O. Box 2138 Sydney or 94 Queen St., Melbourne’, the set was also issued in New Zealand with a Christchurch address on the back and in the UK with a descriptive back and also a back without descriptions advertising the company’s cigarettes. In the case of the British and New Zealand descriptive back issues these were also available in a standard size. This is a fascinating set with cards size 78 x 64. Number of cards in set: L25
Abbreviations used for Number In Set:
EL = Extra Large; LT = Large Trade ( size 89 x 64mm); L = Large; M = Medium; K = Miniature.
