Ships of the World 1963
Ships of the World 1963 48 - This set contains colour pictures of vessels from the 1950s and ‘60s, but by far the best thing about these is the detailed text on the reverse from which you can learn not just the owners, specifications and type of cargo, but also the name of the captain. For instance the card for the “Canberra”, which was later used as a troop ship in the Falklands War, was captained by Commodore G.A. Wild, carried 2,1888 passengers in luxury and had a crew of 960. Other liners include R.M.S. “Windsor Castle”, S.S. “Rotterdam”, R.M.S. “Queen Elizabeth”, S.S. “Bremen”, R.M.S. “Rangitane”, S.S. “United States”, S.S. “Oriana” and S.S. “Southern Cross. It is not just passenger liners that are covered as there are fishing trawlers including the “Mary Craig”, cable ship C.S. “Retriever”, M.V. “Vasilios R” a tramp ship designed to navigate the St. Lawrence Seaway, tankers including Shell’s S.S. “Serenia”, a Trinity House pilot ship, a British Railways train ferry which operated between Harwich and Zeebrugge, coal ship M.V. “Corsea”, cargo vessels including a refrigerated fruit carrier owed by Fyffes and a River Thames clay transporter. There is no card number 13 in this set instead there is a card numbered 12A. In her review in our magazine in 1963 Dorothy Bagnall wondered if it could be that the compiler was superstitious, but who knows! This is a very fine set with cards size 68 x 38mm.

The Story of Ships 1940
The Story of Ships 1940 50 - This set was issued briefly towards the end of 1940 but withdrawn in February 1941. The outstanding colour pictures have varnished fronts and illustrate vessels chronologically from boats of Ancient Egyptian times through to the 1930s. Along the way we see Columbus’s ship the Santa Maria, Drake’s Golden Hind, Nelson’s Victory, Brunel’s Great Eastern, the battlecruiser HMS Hood and the liner Queen Mary. There is plenty of text on the back to keep you informed of the developments and history of ships. An excellent set for any collection. Cards size 67 x 40mm
