United Dairies Miscellaneous Trade Cards The Story of Milk 1966 The Story of Milk 1966 25 - These excellent colour cards look at all aspects of milk production in 1966 at a time when most people had milk delivered to their door in glass bottles and children had free milk at school. These were the days before people worried about fat content so it is no surprise the first card pictures a Jersey cow and the set goes on to take us through every step in production with informative write-up on the reverse. In those days most milk was still put into churns which were collected by lorry, but times were changing and some farms had installed bulk tanks enabling the milk to be immediately cooled and collected by a tanker which took it straight to the bottling plant. Churns by contrast went to a local depot which emptied them into tanks and the churns where then sterilised and returned to the farms by the lorries when they next went to make a collection. Milk was then transferred by road or rail to processing plants where it was pasteurised, put in bottles and sealed with an aluminium foil cap. They then made their way to the depots where they were collected by the milkman in his van (usually electric) and delivered to the doorstep. The last card is an appeal to everyone to rinse and return bottles so they can be re-used. This set was also issued by Bishops Stortford Dairy Farmers Ltd in 1966, Clover Dairies in 1964 and Home Counties Dairies Tea in 1965. These days with all the worry about plastic perhaps more people will return to doorstep deliveries. Cards size 68 x 36mm.
