Walls Aviation & Space Moon Fleet 1966 Moon Fleet 1966 48 - There was considerable interest in space travel back in 1966 when this set was issued. Space craft had already made it to the moon and within a few years astronauts would be making their famous space-walk. This educational set depicts a journey to the moon, explaining how rockets work, details of space exploration already carried out and details of the moon along the way. We also see how the astronauts train, how the rockets will take off and separate and the landing craft touch down on the moon’s surface. The cards then take us through the proposed space walk and the duties of the crew and how they will return to earth. The rest of the set is then given over to possible developments in the future such as building a space station, moon exploration, building a lunar base and exploring other planets in our solar system. The backs are full of well researched facts, but it is the sense of confidence and excitement that really shines through as demonstrated on the back of card 22 which tells us Saturn 5 and its Apollo moonship stands ready for lift-off and “more than 300,000 people in the United States are working to achieve this moment in history – the day when three men will be launched to the Moon. America has planned the flight for 1969”. This is a very well-done set with cards size 67 x 36mm.
