Heading to Paris from America in 1925 at the age of 19, she became a sensation in ‘La Revue Negre’, then star of the Folies Bergere. Having taken French citizenship, she became a wartime Resistance courier and spy, for which she was awarded the Croix de Guerre. In the 1950s she returned to the States and took up the civil rights cause, but the later years were back in France and she became the first American woman to receive a state funeral in that country. In the 1960s she concentrated on stage and TV appearances including 'The Judy Garland Show' in which her daughters from her first marriage, Lorna and Liza Minnelli, regularly appeared.
