Westminster Tobacco Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Australia 2nd Series (Plain back) 1933 Australia 2nd Series (Plain back) 1933 36 - This set was prepared around 1933 but never actually issued and pictures scenes from around Australia. Unfortunately the backs are plain so aside from the title on the front there is no other information. What is nice about this set is that as well as the usual tourist spots such as the Captain Cook monument, Wilson Hall in Melbourne, Leura Falls in the Blue Mountains, Mount Buffalo, the Brisbane River, the Botanical Gardens Adelaide and Martin Place, Sydney there are unusual scenes of showing people and places of work such as pearl fishermen, carting timber in Victoria, Tasmanian hop fields, a pineapple plantation, , cotton growing, a drover’s camp, a South Australian Vineyard, harvesting wheat and the Golden Mile in Western Australia or involved in leisure pursuits such as climbing Mount Feathertop in Victoria, sailing in Sydney Harbour or enjoying the races at the Melbourne Cup. Also including is the royal visit for the state opening of Australia’s new capital Canberra. A fascinating set with card size 66 x 35mm

Bucktrout (Guernsey) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Inventors Series 1924 Inventors Series 1924 20 - Visitors to Guernsey in the Channel Islands may be familiar with the firm of Bucktrout & Co whose premises in St. Peter Port is a mecca for wine buffs, but before the war they also made their own brands of cigarettes in association with the Guernsey Tobacco Company, an offshoot of British American Tobacco. This set is among several series issued in the 1920s and was basically the same as R & J Hill’s 1907 series of Inventors and Their Inventions, using the same colour pictures and descriptive text, but with “Bucktrout & Co. Ltd, manufacturers of all the famous Guernsey-made cigarettes” on the backs together with “Keep this card. The number on it may prove of advantage to you”. This was a reference to numerals over-printed on some cards in connection with a prize scheme. Among the worthies in this set are Pierre Curie (radium), Samuel Morse (electric telegraph), Santos Dumont (airship), Humphrey Davy (safety lamp), Thomas Edison (phonograph), Robert Stephenson (engineer), Hiram Maxim (maxim gun), George Stephenson (first locomotive) and Guglielmo Marconi (wireless telegraph), but no women! If such a series were compiled today we wonder how many of these pioneers would be included, but this is a fascinating set backed by plenty of information and well worth adding to any collection. Cards size 68 x 38mm.
