Famous Naval Men 1929
Issuer: Carreras
Condition: Very Good to Excellent
* These are original and NOT reprints
Description: These black and white portraits are a mixture of reproductions of paintings and actual photographs and have glossy fronts. The famous sailors include Sir Francis Drake, Lord Nelson and Lord Collingwood who succeeded him, Sir John Franklin who was leader of the ill-fated expedition to find the North-West Passage, Earl Jellicoe who was First Sea Lord in the First World War, Earl Beatty who received the surrender of the German Fleet in 1918 and Sir George Cockburn who conveyed Napoleon to St. Helena. The backs contain interesting information about the men and their careers. For instance, we learn that Lord Fisher during his career held practically every position of importance in the Navy both ashore and afloat, that Sir Charles Madden a gunnery specialist was brother-in-law to Earl Jellicoe or that Vice-Admiral H.D.R. Watson joined the Navy in 1885 and was commanding the Reserve Fleet in 1926. An interesting set with cards size 76 x 63mm. Number of cards in set: L24
