Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Malayan Industries 1929 Malayan Industries 1929 27 - Carreras had already produced a set in 1928 titled Malayan Scenes (see website for availability), but clearly their fascination with the Malaya was not at an end as in 1929 they issued another set, but this time looking at industries in the region. These interesting black and white photos, backed by plenty of facts, show such things as tapping a rubber tree, sterilising the fruit of oil palms, a banana plant, a coconut estate, pineapple cultivation, transporting pipes using elephants, creping machinery on a rubber estate, betel nut palms, kapok trees which were ideal as they were quick growing and provided fibre for stuffing mattresses etc. and oil for soap, drying rattans to make canes, the transportation of coconut by oxen and boat, milling sugar cane and irrigation for rice planting. In those days most of the processes were hands-on and it is fascinating to see the use of animals and natives at work. Card no. 10 pictures the unusual hats worn by Chinese women labourers in the oil palm industry and we are told that these fringed hats denote their married state. Even by 1929 many of these processes were being mechanised and nowhere is the contrast between the old and the new more obvious than on card no. 9 which shows a bucket dredge at a tin mine, a major advance in mining, but in the foreground a man is crossing a rickety walkway carrying a load on his head. A real snapshot in time and size 69 x 36mm.

Mitchell Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Our Empire 1937 Our Empire 1937 50 - Produced at the height of Britain’s imperial might, when Britannia ruled the waves and much of the globe was coloured red showing the extent of the “Empire on which the sun never sets”, the subjects are much more diverse than the series title would have us believe. Malta, Gibraltar, Suez, the Victoria Falls, etc., are pictured as are the King & Queen, the Imperial State Crown, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Taj Mahal. But also included are HMS Hood, Tilbury Docks, Empire Flying-Boats, policemen in the Sudan and Kenya, a diamond mine, the remote South Atlantic island of South Georgia, John Buchan author of “The Thirty-Nine Steps”, Baden Powell among the Canadian Indians, the liner “Strathmore” and the Canadian memorial on Vimy Ridge. The brown and cream illustrations recall a world very different from today’s. Size 68 x 36mm

Wix Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Builders of Empire 1937 Builders of Empire 1937 50 - Issued in 1937 at a time when parts of the British Empire such as India and South Africa were already calling for independence this set looks at the royalty, statesmen, warriors and explorers who had carved their names in history and provided the foundations for that empire. Originally issued in packets of Kensitas cigarettes which are described on the back as “the mild cigarette – just what the doctor ordered” these contain excellent colour pictures of figures such as Lord Kitchener, David Livingstone, King George V, Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, author Rudyard Kipling who was nicknamed “Poet of the Empire”, Sir Francis Drake, Florence Nightingale etc. Obviously times change and some of those included are now notorious like Cecil Rhodes, but also included are some we had never heard of such as Sir Eyre Coote who defended Southern India against the French or Baroness Burdett-Coutts who lived from 1814 to 1906 devoting her life to practical philanthropy and overseas missionary work. The pictures are backed by an informative text making this a must for any collection. Cards size 70 x 40mm.
