Eastern Proverbs 1st Series (CCS reprint 2001)
Issuer: Churchman Condition: Mint Description: This charming little set originally issued in 1931, but reprinted in 2001, features colourful illustrations of ancient proverbs from the East. The informative backs give us an idea of the meaning and also compares similar sayings from other countries including Britain. For instance the Indian proverb ‘Call on God, but row away from the rocks’ is compared to the Persian ‘Trust in Allah but spread not your prayer-carpet in a wet place and Cromwell’s ‘Trust in God but keep your powder dry’. The meaning of some is obvious just from the pictures and text on the front such as ‘Look at the mother before becoming engaged to the daughter’ however some are more obscure such as ‘Picking up a large stone is a sign it won’t be thrown’ or ‘Look the other way when the girl at the tea house smiles’. A lovely set size 68 x 36mm. Number of cards in set: 25
Price for complete set: Only £8.00
