Players Dogs and Pets Dogs Heads by Biegel 1955 Dogs Heads by Biegel 1955 50 - Although the issuing of cigarette cards did not start up again on a large scale after World War II the major tobacco companies commissioned several new series which they kept in reserve in case the opposition resumed issuing them. One of the subjects chosen by Players for this purpose was Dogs Heads by the artist Peter Biegel. The advantages of such a series are apparent – dogs are popular, appeal to men and women and they do not date so that the cards could be released after being stored for years with no one the wiser. Apart from his name Biegel was a wise choice because his colour portraits of these fifty breeds seem faithfully to capture each individual’s personality. Among the breeds portrayed are the Yorkshire Terrier, English Springer Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Old English Sheepdog, Irish Setter, Yellow Labrador, Golden Retriever, Pug, Poodle, Pekingese and Dachshund. The backs are full of information about the breed, for example the card for the Alsatian tells us that their strong and intelligent personalities “were used to great effect in the Second World War when they were employed for such diverse purposes as guard duties and mine detecting”. A fabulous canine set with cards 66 x 36
