Dogs 1939
Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Dogs and Pets Dogs 1939 Dogs 1939 M48 - This set celebrates dogs in all their different shapes and sizes and was originally issued with ‘Senior Service’ cigarettes. The black and white pictures are first class and there is a brief description of each breed on the back, but there is more as the write-ups also include general hints on handling, raising and feeding puppies (apparently most are partial to a piece of orange and at bedtime leave some food the pup does not much care for such as a stale crust, in case it gets hungry in the night), registering dogs, disease control (disinfect his box with a mixture of eucalyptus and turpentine) etc. Training hints include “never throw a dog into the water to teach him to swim”, “if he tries to go off the pavement jerk him back sharply and scold him” or “if your pup starts yapping say ‘quiet’ and cuff him”. You’d have to be a real dog-hater not to find the puppy pictures adorable and the adult dogs aren’t bad either! Breeds include the Irish Setter, Bull Terrier, Welsh Springer, Cocker & Clumber Spaniels, a Great Dane, Pugs, Pekingese, Saluki, Corgis, Poodles, Westies, Dachshunds, an Alsatian, French Bulldog, Dalmatians, Golden Retrievers and Labradors. Cards size 76 x 51mm.

G D S Cards Dogs and Pets Dogs 2006 Dogs 2006 L20 - These colour pictures have a period look, demonstrated by the toy group where the Yorkshire Terrier, Italian Greyhound and Pug are shown in a formal setting with a Victoria-style tennis racquet and balls, and by the Terriers posing with a walking cane and gloves in the foreground. A mixture of singles, pairs and groups is an effective ploy which makes the series stand out from the other dogs sets. The texts describing various aspects of the breed give a suspicion of American origin. Size 80 x 62mm.

Sanders Dogs and Pets Dogs 1924 Dogs 1924 20 - A popular subject for card issuing companies (as is apparent from our ‘Dogs and Pets’ thematic list) and not surprising considering they are regarded by many as ‘man’s best friend’, dogs come in many shapes and sizes and have the added benefit that many breeds can be useful – Collies, Retrievers, Bloodhounds, St. Bernards, Terriers and so on, all having a role to play – and these are among the twenty types included in this set, coinciding with the Kennel Club’s Crufts Show. Issued in 1924, Sanders’ Dogs exhibit delightful colour artwork backed by texts which are detailed enough to make us into knowledgeable judges of show-winning characteristics, as well as advertising the firm’s leading products – their ‘custard de luxe’ and ‘transparent and full flavoured jelly crystals’. Size 69 x 37mm

Wills Dogs and Pets Dogs 1937 Dogs 1937 50 - These cards reproduce realistic dog portraits by famous British wildlife painter Arthur Wardle, all set against pale pastel backgrounds and backed by informative text. If you love dogs you won’t be able to resist these as the characters of the canines really shine through, especially the card for the Bassett Hound. Amongst the other breeds featured are the Alsatian, Bulldog, Dachshund, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Poodle, Pug and Golden Retriever. The adhesive backs tell the history of the breed and what characteristics to look out for instance the Old English Sheepdog should have a dense shaggy coat which is almost blue with white markings. This set was also reprinted in 2001 and was also available in a Channel Islands issue with an adhesive back and an Irish issue with a non adhesive back. These are little works of art with cards size 68 x 36mm.
