The first eighteen cards use original artwork by Dave Sharpe or Matthew Zeigler to illustrate battle scenes numbered CW1 to CW18 with the action described on the backs. These are followed by reprints of eighteen contemporary chromo-lithographs (numbered KA1 to KA18) picturing battles in chronological order from Bull Run in July 1861 to Chattanooga in November 1863.
