Gallaher Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Stars of Screen and Stage back in Brown 1935 Stars of Screen and Stage back in Brown 1935 48 - In recent years cinema has undergone a resurgence with bigger audiences and a succession of box office blockbusters, but admissions are never going to regain the dizzy heights of the 1930s when the silver screen reigned supreme. This set turns the clock back to 1935 when some of the greatest stars of all time were pulling in crowds of fifty million or more a week at palatial cinemas around the country. Issued with Gallaher’s Cigarettes’ these colour pictures and informative text backs allow us to get up-close and personal with favourite stars of the era. For instance we see Gary Cooper (educated in England and a newspaper cartoonist before taking up acting), George Robey (music hall’s ‘Prime Minister of Mirth’), Ronald Colman (born in Richmond and a seaside pierrot before films), Beatrice Lilley with her unique gift of humour and mimicry, Florence Desmond (no stranger to collectors because of the Carreras Film Stars series bearing her name), the Houston Sisters (Renee was in radio’s “The Petticoat Line” until the 1980s), Jack Hulbert (whose name is inseparably linked with his equally popular wife Cicely Courtneidge), Bebe Daniels who like Ginger Rogers (also in this set) made her name in ‘42nd Street’ and is remembered for her role in radio’s ‘Life With the Lyons’ with her husband Ben Lyon and comedy favourites Laurel and Hardy. Pure nostalgia with cards size 63 x 37mm. This set was also issued with a green back.

Anonymous Tobacco Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Cinema Stars Set 6 (Plain Back) 1935 Cinema Stars Set 6 (Plain Back) 1935 30 - This is a fine set containing colour pictures of some of Britain’s most famous stately homes with plenty of historical and architectural information on the reverse. The cards come in their own special box and are part of the Fax Pax range of ‘Knowledge in a Nutshell’ sets. Among the gems featured are Woburn Abbey the first house to be developed as a tourist attraction, Traquair House in the Scottish borders, the iconic St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, George the IV’s extravagantly over-the-top Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Powis Castle in Wales, Osborne House on the Isle of Wight designed by Prince Albert, Longleat in Wiltshire better known these days for its safari park, Knowle in Kent which is one of the largest, Hatfield House in Hertfordshire where Elizabeth I was living when she became queen, Chatsworth in Derbyshire which has the highest fountain in the world, Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire where Winston Churchill was born, Blickling Hall in Norfolk once owned by the family of Anne Boleyn and Castle Howard in Yorkshire where ‘Brideshead Revisited’ was filmed. The facts on the back not only tell you about the building, but also about the family associated with them, for instance we learn that the 6th Duke of Somerset acquired Petworth House on his marriage to Elizabeth Percy, but was so proud he made his own children stand in his presence. A fascinating set with cards size 67 x 36mm. The set was also issued by Cavanders with text backs in colour.
