Morris Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Captain Blood 1937 Captain Blood 1937 25 - The colour pictures are based on the 1935 pirate film which starred Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, and the 1922 novel by Rafael Sabatini. In this tale a doctor during the reign of King James II is wrongly convicted of treason and sentenced to slavery in the West Indies. He becomes the property of Arabella with whom he is in love, but when the crew of a Spanish privateer attack Port Royal Blood he and his companions, after making sure Arabella is safe, manage to capture the ship and become pirates. After the attack Arabella is sent by her uncle to England, but three years later returns on the same ship as the Royal Emissary Lord Willoughby. By a quirk of fate Arabella and the Emissary are rescued by Captain Blood from another pirate, but in trying to return them to Port Royal they find the settlement under attack from French frigates. Blood is offered a pardon if he will defend the port and he tricks the French with false colours. In the bitter hand-to-hand battle which follows he loses his ship, but the French are defeated and Port Royal saved. He is awarded the governorship of the settlement and at last gets to marry Arabella. The cards are a mixture of vertical and horizontal pictures and the numbered backs give plenty of detail concerning the story. Size 67 x 36mm
