Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Railways British Railways 1938 British Railways 1938 M48 - A look back at the old days of British railways as a golden age and it is easy to see why with this set which was produced in 1938. That year ‘Senior Service Cigarettes’ cost a shilling for twenty and included a free card from this set of 48 which features superb photographs of locos, the travelling post office, a turntable, wind tunnel etc. Among the most dramatic is a photograph titled the ‘Big Five, which pictures five new (in 1938) engines of the ‘Silver Link’ class steamed and ready to haul the Coronation expresses with sound-proofed and air-conditioned coaches. One of these engines 4468 ‘Mallard’ had just set up a new world steam record of 126mph. Other famous expresses include the ‘Flying Scotsman’, the ‘Royal Scot’, the ‘Mancunian’, ‘Torbay Express’ and ‘Golden Arrow’, but the set also includes a camping coach which are parked up at beautiful locations and rented to the public as holiday homes, the train ferry between England and France and a track laying vehicle.
