United Kingdom Tobacco Amazing Black Friday to Cyber Monday Deals British Orders of Chivalry and Valour 1936 British Orders of Chivalry and Valour 1936 25 - Towards the end of 1936 United Kingdom Tobacco began issuing this series of 25 cards with their ‘Greys Cigarettes’ and our new issuers reviewer in early 1937 referred to them as “a most interesting and exceptionally well produced issue in full colour. A long time has elapsed since the last series on this subject and this set includes examples of the insignia and orders not included in older sets”. So we have here ancient orders such as the Most Noble Orders of the Garter, Thistle and Bath, Victorian orders such as the Star of India, Albert Medal, Royal Victorian Order and, of course, the Victoria Cross plus several more recent ones instituted by George V at the time of the Great War such as the O.B.E., Companions of Honour, Military Cross, Military Medal, D.F.C etc. The presentation is impeccable, the black background serving to emphasize the rich colours and the backs are packed with interesting information – for instance regarding the V.C. this was, we are told, “from 1920 also awarded to certain women and civilians”. We were surprised to read that the Order of Merit is “awarded to officers of both services” as surely in 1936 that should have been all three services? That said this is a splendid series peppered with anachronisms such as “now eligible to women” and “confined to 100 natives”, a reminder of the changes which have occurred in the many years since this set was issued. The backs are adhesive and the cards size 67 x 36mm.

British American Tobacco (without firms name) Reprinted Series Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) 50 - These cards take a look at lighthouses around the British Isles. Some are well-known like those at Dungeness, Spurn Head, Bishop Rock on the Isles of Scilly, Flamborough Head near Scarborough, Smeaton Tower or Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth or Corbiere Lighthouse on Jersey, but no matter where they are they have all at some time or another been built to prevent shipping from disaster. When this set was produced many of these structures were still manned and in use and you have to admire the courage of the lighthouse keepers in their lonely structures buffeted by wind and sea. The lighthouses are pictured in colour on the front and the backs give the history, details of the range of its light and fog warning system. This set was also produced by British American Tobacco and by Wills with their ‘Three Castles’ overseas brand. A fascinating set with cards size 67 x 35mm.
