Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Doncella Issue 1987
Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Doncella Issue 1987 L30 - In the history of cigarette cards tens of thousands of different series have been issued including many hundreds on a wildlife theme, but this is one of the first and only sets devoted entirely to ‘creatures of the night’. These were originally packed with ‘Doncella’ cigars and an alike set was also issued with their ‘Grandee’ brand. The thirty cards (6 vertical, 24 horizontal) bear incredibly clear colour photographs of various types of animal which come to life at night with numbers 1 to 8 being mammals such as a hedgehog, bat or fox, numbers 9 to 14 being birds, 15 to 18 covers reptiles, fish and molluscs, 19 to 26 are insects with spiders and crustaceans finishing the set. All have white borders and the numbered backs are full of interesting information as well as an acknowledgement to the photographer concerned and details of an album which was available from the issuers. A spectacular set with cards size 89 x 50mm.

Britains Endangered Wildlife Doncella Issue 1984
Britains Endangered Wildlife Doncella Issue 1984 L32 - Originally issued with Player’s Doncella brand this is a first-class series of clear colour photographs featuring species either rarely seen or benefitting from conservation efforts. The cards are a mixture of horizontal and vertical format and the backs are numbered with comprehensive and informative text concerning distribution, breeding and the reason why they are vulnerable. The backs also tell us about a free album that could be obtained from the manufacturers. Amongst the creatures featured are the Greater Horseshoe Bat which we are told can only be found in the south-west and Wales, the Natterjack Toad which used to be found on sandy heaths all over Britain and the Bittern which we are told is in worrying decline with less than 50 pairs left. This set was also issued with Player’s Grandee Cigars with the same pictures and text but with Grandee instead of Doncella. These beautiful and informative cards, size 90 x 50mm, add greatly to the appreciation of our wildlife.
