Churchman Football Association Footballers 1st Series 1938 Association Footballers 1st Series 1938 50 - Some of the clubs which were in the Premiership in 2014 were also represented in this set, for instance Manchester United (W. Roughton and W. McKay), Arsenal (E. Drake & E Hapgood), Chelsea (V. Woodley & P. Buchanan), Manchester City (P. Doherty) and Liverpool (B. Nieuwenhuys). Seeing two Preston North End players (Andrew Beattie and George Mutch) included in the set, it occurs to us that they may well have encountered a star-to-be, Tom Finney, then a 16-year old ground staff boy at Preston. It’s also interesting to note that Stoke City’s Stanley Matthews “has been with the club since starting work in the office on leaving school. Capped when a schoolboy he is now England’s first choice.” Size 68 x 36mm
