The backgrounds to the fronts are in varying light to dark shades of gold/olive with an oval black and white picture of the pop star or stars in the centre performing on stage. The stars concerned are Bob Geldof, Freddie Mercury, Brian Ferry, Phil Collins, Sting, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Pete Townsend & Roger Daltry. The backs are numbered 1 to 4, 7 and 13 to 15 and as well as the printer’s details the backs feature the words “With Compliments Orpheus Records” and their address, but other than this are blank save for the star’s name. Brindley Pop Stars & Singers Opera Stars 1988 Opera Stars 1988 30 - This is a rather nice set on a subject that doesn’t appear much on cards. The opera stars are depicted in black and white ovals set within a salmon/pink background and include Enrico Caruso (1873-1921) who was the first tenor to have his voice on a record, Greek soprano singer Maria Callas, more modern favourites Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, Ezio Pinza famous for his role in Don Giovanni, but he also sang in the musical South Pacific, Edna Thornton an English contralto famous for her roles in Wagnerian operas, Amelita Galli-Curci who became a major recording star, Australian soprano Dame Nellie Melba and Paul Robeson who played Otello but is best known for his rendition of “Ol’ Man River” in the musical Show Boat. The green backs contain white text advertising Brindley and Orpheus Records and give details of the star and their musical ability and best roles. Cards size 70 x 38mm.
