Lambert & Butler Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Keep Fit 1937 Keep Fit 1937 50 - We are often told nowadays that a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise has turned us into a nation of couch-potatoes and obesity is on the rise, but this was not the case back in the 1930s before everyone had a car and burgers were available to eat in front the telly. Even so the reviewer in our magazine back in December 1937 felt that fitness was “a very topical issue”. This set contains 25 exercises for women that were suggested by the 1936 women’s Olympic coach and 25 for men which are described in great detail on the reverse and demonstrated in colour pictures and diagrams on the front. A footnote on the back of each card advises “information on similar exercises can be obtained from Central Council of Recreative Physical Training, Abbey House, SW1” which may indicate this is one of those series produced with semi-official Government backing in a subtle effort to prepare the nation psychologically and physically for the coming war, although there is no firm evidence for this. Whatever the truth the advice and exercises in this set remains as useful today as it ever was. Cards size 68 x 36mm.
