Actresses 1898
Morris Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Actresses 1898 Actresses 1898 30 - These are black bordered black and white photos of actresses from the 1890s which are stamped on the front “photo of Bassano”. English photographer Alessandro Bassano was all the rage in the late Victorian era and was famous for his high society portraits and picture of Kitchener which was used in the famous recruiting poster in WWI. He seems to have taken just as much trouble with these beauties who include Dora Bateman who went on to appear in silent movies, Jessie Bateman who began as a child actress, Muriel Beaumont who retired from acting in 1910 and is the mother of writer Daphne du Maurier, Rosie Boote who caused scandal by marrying the 4th Marquis of Headford in 1901, Evie Green a star of Edwardian musical comedies and Decima Moore a singer/actress who sung soprano with the D’oly Carte Opera Company, was active in the women’s suffrage movement and was awarded a CBE for her work in the First World War. Curiously two of the ladies appear more than once, but we don’t know why. Singer and comedian Nina Sevening appears on 3 cards and Marie Shields on 2. The plain back cards measure 68 x 41mm.

Wills Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Safety First 1934 (CCS reprint 2000) Safety First 1934 (CCS reprint 2000) 50 - Road safety was a real problem in 1934 when these were originally issued and the colourful cards illustrate some of the dangers. Actually aside from issues with tramlines and using hand signals as there were no indicators most these safety instructions are still relevant today, but it is the charming vintage pictures which are the real attraction. The warnings include not overtaking on bends, not squeezing through traffic if you are a motor-cyclist, how to pass animals, how to correct a skid and not to throw anything from a moving car as well as how to cross safely. There is plenty of further information on the card backs. Cards size 68 x 36mm.
