Golden Era Motoring British Trucks (1950s and 1960s) 2010 British Trucks (1950s and 1960s) 2010 L10 - Golden Era did a set in 1999 then it was titled “British Lorries of the 1950s & 1960s”. This new series calls them trucks instead of lorries. The subjects are British through and through, with examples from Austin, Foden, Fordson, Leyland, Morris and Scammell, plus a Bedford TK of the type I once drove myself as a summer job, all dating from the 1950s and 1960s. Mike Jeffries original artwork is absolutely superb, recreating the period perfectly and in stunning detail, whilst the texts are of the high quality we expect from this firm. Size 79 x 62mm.

Golden Era Motoring Bygone Buses (1950s and 1960s) 2010 Bygone Buses (1950s and 1960s) 2010 L10 - Mike Jeffries’ illustrations are simply terrific, bringing to life scenes from half a century ago with some extraordinarily evocative portraits of buses and coaches, from Bristol K double-decker on a sunny Weymouth sea-front to a Daimler CWA 6 threading its way through Mersey Square, Stockport in the drizzle of a gloomy evening. The classic vehicles were built to last – witness the “new lock” Guy Arab MK IV in service with Birmingham City Transport from 1950 to 1977. This set is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in P.S.Vs. Size 79 x 62mm.

Golden Era Motoring Classic Lorries (1950s and 1960s) 2010 Classic Lorries (1950s and 1960s) 2010 L10 - Here are ten more from the 1950s and 1960s, as listed on the cover card which pictures a Leyland tanker in Taunton Cider livery, but mistakenly captioned “this card –Foden S21 – Albion Sugar” a vehicle which features on No. 4 in the aforementioned British Trucks set. The artwork is faultless – I can’t get over how skilful this artist is. Size 79 x 62mm

G D S Cards Birds, Butterflies & Moths Finches by Butler and Frohawk (1899) 2010 Finches by Butler and Frohawk (1899) 2010 L20 - The colourful illustrations presented on these cards within an ornamental border are reproductions of printings by Butler and Frohawk at the end of the 19th century, with the birds as pairs showing male and female, or closely related variants. Finches are seed-eaters and they are found all over the world in one form or other, but those in this set are examples from the warmer climes of South America, Africa, Asia and Australia, with only one, the Scarlet Rose Finch having bred sporadically in the U.K., as revealed by the up-to-date texts on the backs describing distribution, habitat, etc., plus status such as “evaluated as Least Concern” Size 80 x 61mm.

Golden Era Motoring Ford and Fordson Tractors 1945-1970 (2010) Ford and Fordson Tractors 1945-1970 (2010) L7 - Here we see Ford Tractors built between 1945 and 1973, beginning with the E27N Major the first of which rolled off the production line at Dagenham on 19th March 1945, through to the Fordson 5000 SY, with cab as required by safety legislation, produced fro 1967 to 1973. The texts remind us of the heyday of tractor production in this country with output of 350 a day at Dagenham in the early ‘60s far outstripping Ford’s USA production. Size 79 x 62mm.

G D S Cards Birds, Butterflies & Moths Hummingbirds by M E Mulsant and J B E Verreaux (1876-77) 2010 Hummingbirds by M E Mulsant and J B E Verreaux (1876-77) 2010 L20 - Gerald Segasby has culled his illustrations from the work of 19th century naturalists which shows these amazing birds whose wings beat so fast they hum as they hover collecting nectar from flowers. All the species pictured are from South or Central America, although the Ruby-throated Hummingbird can nest as far north as Florida. The colour paintings also feature the plants on which the birds rely, and the texts provide some fascinating facts such as the Vervain’s nest being only the size of half a walnut shell. G D S Cards Flowers and the Garden Orchids by Robert Warner and Thomas Moore (1882) 2010 Orchids by Robert Warner and Thomas Moore (1882) 2010 L20 - It’s a fallacy to assume that orchids are restricted to the tropics. In the field next to my house hundreds of pyramid orchids and bee orchids flourish, and in this set of cards we see the Lady’s-slipper which flourishes in limestone areas across England. But the more exotic varieties which hale from South America and Asia are pictured on the other nineteen cards showing how extraordinarily diverse these plants are, and the lovely artwork does justice to the blooms whilst the text provide much factual information. Topps (USA) Star Wars Star Wars Galaxy Series 5 2010 Star Wars Galaxy Series 5 2010 LT120 - Following in similar vein to the 4th Series, this 5th Series welcomes us to “the newest collection of art, both pre-existing and unpublished, conceived in the service of George Lucas’ immortal fantasy classic Star Wars with new visions by leading illustrators and the artwork used for production, advertising and tie-in projects.” You’ll have to see the cards themselves to get the true picture(!) of what all this entails and the descriptive backs include a second (different) scene. Strictly Ink (UK) Films, TV, Sci Fi & Comic Art The Avengers Series 3 Additions The Archive Collection 2010 The Avengers Series 3 Additions The Archive Collection 2010 LT54 - As the first card in this new series tells us, the collection complements the first two releases (each of 100 cards, as per the Trade Card Catalogue) with many new and unpublished images giving an insight into some of the rarer episodes of The Avengers premiered between 1961 and 1964 by means of black and white photos, the backs of which briefly summarise the plot but, most interestingly, give “inside information” about the production, location work, accidents happening on set, even pay incomes for the actors. I regard the texts as the best of all TV-related card series and this set is an absolute ‘must’ for all fans of The Avengers. Size 89 x 64mm.
