Carreras A Special Offer of £2, £3 and £5 Sets Military Uniforms 1976 Military Uniforms 1976 50 - This set takes a look at British uniforms from 1860 to 1960 and provides a historical record of the changing times in the armed services. We see how breeches give way to trousers and the ornate braiding, gold edging and lace are gradually pared down. The set starts with a Musketeer of the King’s Royal Regiment of Guards in 1660 with his blue breeches and red gaiters and continues with an officer of the First Regiment of Foot Guards 1685, a Garde Te Voet in stunning blue and gold uniform who accompanied William of Orange when he succeeded to the British throne, a Private of the Grenadier Company 1791, a Sergeant of the Coldstream Regiment of Foot from the time of the American Revolutionary Wars, an 1812 Foot Guards Ensign carrying the regimental colour, a Light Company Officer of the Scots Fusilier Guards 1846, Coldstream Guards Drummer, a Grenadier Guards Pioneer of 1853 portrayed with apron and axe, 1853 Bandsman etc. Also included is a 1925 Subaltern wearing “plus fours” and puttees which had been adopted in the First World War, battle dress from 1950, kilts of the Irish and Scots Guards and No. 1 Dress of the Coldstream Guards of 1960. Good pictures with informative text on the reverse. An album was also issued to accompany this set. Size 69 x 36mm

Carreras Fish, Fishing & the Ocean Sport Fish 1978 Sport Fish 1978 50 - This is set an angler’s dream as it not only contains rather good colour pictures of fish that can be caught in an around the British Isles, but the text on the back gives you helpful hints on when and where to find them, what sort of bait to use, the average weight, markings and habits. For instance we are told that the Porbeagle Shark averages 100lb and is an ideal quarry for big fish hunters. It can be found between June and October off the Isle of Wight, West Country and coast of Ireland, but you will need a heavy shark rod and 120lb line to go after this beauty. There are plenty of more common examples from our rivers and seas including Dace, Roach, Chub, Common Carp, Tench, Catfish, Perch, Eel, Pike, Trout (both Rainbow, Sea and Brown), Salmon, Dab, Flounder, Turbot, Mackerel, Common Skate, Pollack, Ling, Bass etc. Catching all of these would be quite a challenge and respect to any who have achieved this, but this set is not just for anglers as the detailed pictures are also worth adding to any collection, especially if you are a nature lover. Size 70 x 35mm. A special album to contain this set was also issued – see website for availability

Carreras Dogs and Pets Greyhound Racing Game Instruction Leaflet 1926 Greyhound Racing Game Instruction Leaflet 1926 L1 - This leaflet was produced in connection with a set of L52 Greyhound Racing Game cards (see website for availability) and give instructions on how to play the game. The cards included 15 whips, 16 obstacles, 10 dogs, 10 greyhound (single and groups) and 1 hare. These days hare coursing is rare and rightly so, but obviously in the 1920s this was not the case as the card set was all about chasing the hare. The basic premise of the game is that as soon as the hare card is played the first player to play a single greyhound card is the winner. When scoring the winner is awarded points for cards in the losers’ hands i.e 5 points for each single greyhound, 1 for each obstacle card etc. When opened flat the leaflet is size 88 x 89mm

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of London 1929 Views of London 1929 27 - Pretty well every major landmark is included, from Marble Arch in the west to Tower Bridge in the east. More than eighty years after these cards came out you could still use them to organise your own tour of the capital and the texts will tell you all you need to know about the sights. Particularly fascinating, though, is the amount of detail revealed in the stunningly clear pictures – you might even be able to make out, with the aid of a magnifier, the numbers on open-top buses or read the advertisements on buildings – and then there are the horse-drawn cabs, a delivery boy cycling past the Horse Guards and a throng of citizens going about their business. Fascinating stuff! Size 68 x 36mm

Carreras Royalty Regalia Series 1925 Regalia Series 1925 L20 - This is a very good set with fine colour pictures of Britain's priceless royal regalia, some of which can be seen in the Tower of London and other items which appear only at a sovereign's coronation. It begins with the jewel-encrusted Imperial State Crown and ends with the 12th century Anointing Spoon, the oldest piece. The backs give a fascinating insight into our royal history, and among the interesting titbits we learn that the wonderful Koh-I-Noor diamond in the Tower is a fake, the real stone being kept at Windsor. It's a worthy addition to any collection.

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1939 Do You Know 1939 50 - No fewer than seven out of the fifty cards in Do You Know? by Carreras were concerned with Army or Navy matters. Perhaps the compiler had a military background, or was it because the series was produced in 1939 just before war broke out? We will never know the answer to that one. Having said that, this is an extremely well-produced series with excellent illustrations and factual texts covering topics as diverse as the origin of bowler hats, sandwiches, ‘bobbies’, hallmarks, beefeaters, saluting, the sailor’s collar and horse-shoes for luck – plus some teasers like how much the value of the contents of the British Museum are insured for (answer : nothing), the history behind women wearing wedding rings (originally round the neck so she could be tethered as ‘property’) and how the length of a yard was determined (by Henry I, the distance from the point of his nose to the end of his thumb). Not a lot of people know that! Size 68 x 36mm

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Malayan Scenes 1928 Malayan Scenes 1928 M24 - When this set was issued Malaya was still under British control and the European influence can be seen in many of the pictures in this set. No where is this influence more obvious than Singapore, which although now a separate republic was then part of Malaya. There are pictures of the Victoria Memorial and Theatre, the Raffles Library and Museum, Government House, The King’s Dock and a lovely shot of the Cenotaph with rickshaws contrasting with the very British memorial and car. The back of this last card pays tribute to Malaya’s help in the First World War with both money and men. There are plenty of other black and white scenes including a Chinese circular gateway Penang, the imposing Malay College, the beautiful water tower at Teluck Anson, a surprisingly empty market place in Johore, the delightful Old Market Square in Kuala Lumpur, views of Malacca and the Government Buildings in Kuala Lumpar which are a lovely mix of Malay and European architecture. The pictures are backed by interesting information and the cards are size 70 x 61mm

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Gran Pop by Lawson Wood 1934 Gran Pop by Lawson Wood 1934 L50 - Produced by Carreras in 1934 it is a series of 50 cards featuring ‘Gran-Pop’, a cartoon ape, in humorous colour drawings by the English painter and illustrator Lawson Wood. As well as appearing on cards the ‘Gran-Pop’ character also appeared in a series of annuals that were sold round the world. Lawson Wood was very much concerned with animal welfare and as well as being a member of the Royal Zoological Society he also founded a sanctuary for old animals, but the apes and other animals in his drawings find themselves in very human situations with suitably humorous captions. The card backs contain sepia photos and text showing the manufacture of cigarettes including an illustration of the Arcadia Works of Carreras Ltd in Hampstead Road, London where we are told “happy, healthy workpeople make good cigarettes with care, pride and conscience under the most hygienic manufacturing conditions”. Size 80 x 63mm. This was also produced in a smaller format size 70 x 41mm.

Carreras Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Malayan Industries 1929 Malayan Industries 1929 27 - Carreras had already produced a set in 1928 titled Malayan Scenes (see website for availability), but clearly their fascination with the Malaya was not at an end as in 1929 they issued another set, but this time looking at industries in the region. These interesting black and white photos, backed by plenty of facts, show such things as tapping a rubber tree, sterilising the fruit of oil palms, a banana plant, a coconut estate, pineapple cultivation, transporting pipes using elephants, creping machinery on a rubber estate, betel nut palms, kapok trees which were ideal as they were quick growing and provided fibre for stuffing mattresses etc. and oil for soap, drying rattans to make canes, the transportation of coconut by oxen and boat, milling sugar cane and irrigation for rice planting. In those days most of the processes were hands-on and it is fascinating to see the use of animals and natives at work. Card no. 10 pictures the unusual hats worn by Chinese women labourers in the oil palm industry and we are told that these fringed hats denote their married state. Even by 1929 many of these processes were being mechanised and nowhere is the contrast between the old and the new more obvious than on card no. 9 which shows a bucket dredge at a tin mine, a major advance in mining, but in the foreground a man is crossing a rickety walkway carrying a load on his head. A real snapshot in time and size 69 x 36mm.
