Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Dandies 1932 Dandies 1932 50 - Player's 1932 set of Dandies holds a special interest for collectors beyond the admirable pictures and texts, because it contains one of the most famous gaffs in cigarette card history. Christopher Clark R.I. was responsible for the artwork, and no doubt was careful to be historically accurate when portraying the characters. Unfortunately when it came to Disraeli (subject no.43) he painted Big Ben in the background. However, the text tells us 'Dizzy' was 22 at the time, so the date was 1826? and Big Ben wasn't built till thirty years later! The error was discovered after the first printing was released and an attempt to remove Big Ben in the second run left a ghostly blur. The third run has a plain background and this is what you will see in our set of the month. Elsewhere in the series we meet Narcissus, Julius Caesar, Richard II, Walter Raleigh, Samuel Pepys, George IV, Beau Brummell and Charles Dickens through to London's Pearly Kings and Queens and World Heavyweight boxing champion James. J. Corbett. Size 68 x 36mm

Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Boy Scout and Girl Guide Patrol Signs and Emblems 1933 Boy Scout and Girl Guide Patrol Signs and Emblems 1933 50 - Issued in 1933 these picture both the patrol sign or emblem and the actual creature or plant on which this is based. The first half of the set are all Boy Scout patrol signs including the Beaver, Curlew and Panther and the text on the back tells us about the creature as well as which badges this patrol should specialize in and their call. For instance members of Fox patrol have a call or bark of “Ha Ha” and should study woodcraft and the habits of wildlife. The remainder of the set are Girl Guide emblems which are all bird or plant related and include Swallow, Robin, Primrose and Poppy. As with the backs of the Boy Scout cards the creature or plant is described on the reverse, but instead of a call the patrol motto such as that for Chaffinch Patrol of “Play the game and play it well” is given. This is an excellent set with cards size 68 x 36mm. these were also issued as transfers and also reprinted 2001 by the Card Collectors Society

Players Military & Armed Forces British Naval Craft 1939 British Naval Craft 1939 L25 - Produced by Players in 1939 from the paintings of Frank H. Mason R.I. The artwork is superb and the larger size really does it justice. A visible show of strength of the British Navy as we prepared to go to war the set includes some well-known ships and submarines, many of which didn’t come home such as HMS Egret which was the first ship sunk by guided missile in 1943, HMS Ark Royal, the submarine HMS Sunfish which was the victim of friend fire in 1944, HMS Exeter and battle cruiser HMS Hood which was sunk in 1941 with the loss of 1,418 men. The numbered backs contain a wealth of information concerning the vessel including when and where built, armaments, speed etc. We learn, for instance that to reduce weight HMS Arethusa had aluminium-covered plywood bulkheads, that HMS Nelson had steering gear of an unusual design which enabled the rudder to be swung over in 30 seconds and that the cost of HMS King George V which was only launched in 1939 was expected to exceed £8,500,000. A fitting tribute to all those heroes who battled both sea and enemy in the Second World War. Size 82 x 63mm.

Players Motoring Famous M.G. Marques 1981 Famous M.G. Marques 1981 L28 - There were originally issued with Grandee Cigars and are reproductions of paintings by James Dugdale, a Lancastrian who specialised in paintings of transport. The write-ups on the backs are by John Thornley OBE who was associated with the MG Car Company and the MG Car Club for many years and he gives an informative but concise history of the car and the changes in design that occurred. Card number 1 shows “Old Number One” (1923/25) which we are told was not the first MG to be made, but was built specifically for competition and the final card shows the MGB (1975-80) which was made to American specifications. Between these two cards are many racing cars of the era together with those models which have been and still are admired. This is a fine series of cards commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the MG Car Club and an album/wall chart was originally produced to house these. The cards are size 89 x 50mm

Players Amazing Black Friday to Cyber Monday Deals Modern Naval Craft 1939 Modern Naval Craft 1939 50 - When this series was first issued and reviewed in our magazine Card Collectors News in March 1939 World War II was just a few months away and many of the vessels featured would soon be in action. In December “H.M.S. Exeter” (card no. 6) was one of the ships involved in the Battle of the River Plate against the German battleship “Admiral Graf Spee” (no. 24) and in May 1940 “H.M.S Warspite” (no. 2) created havoc at Narvik inflicting great damage to German defences. A year later the battle cruiser “H.M.S. Hood” (no. 4) was sunk by the “Bismarck” and only three of the crew of 1,400 survived. Three days later the “Bismarck” was herself destroyed after Swordfish torpedo bombers from “H.M.S Ark Royal” (no. 16) damaged her rudder enabling the pursing British forces to finish her off. The “Ark” met her demise in November 1941 when she was torpedoed by a U-boat off Gibraltar, then there was more bad news in December when “H.M.S. Prince of Wales” and “H.M.S. Repulse” (no. 5) were both sunk by Japanese aircraft off Malaya. Among those in the British section is a M.T.B, one of the small, fast 40-knot plus vessels which proved so versatile and effective, but the set also includes ships from the American, Japanese, French, Italian, U.S.S.R and German navies. The adhesive numbered backs contain plenty of information and the cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Players Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Players Past and Present 1916 Players Past and Present 1916 25 - This is a lovely set which contains colour pictures of actors and actresses in their best known role so for example we see Sir Henry Irving, who had died in 1905, in his role as Mephistopheles in ‘Faust’, Sir Herbert Tree as Svengali in ‘Trilby, Gertrude Elliott as Peggy in ‘Mice and Men’, Gladys Cooper who appeared in ‘My Lady’s Dress’ in 1914, legendary actress Ellen Terry as Marguerite in ‘Faust’ and Gerald du Maurier who is depicted as gentleman-burgler Raffles. As well as appearing in this set Gerald has the distinction of having a brand of cigarettes named after him. He was paid for the use of his name, but although a keen smoker he never actually smoked the Du Maurier brand himself! The numbered backs are full of information and enable us to paint a picture of life on the stage at the turn of the century. These great-value cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Players Motoring History of Motor Racing (Ltd printing) 1986 History of Motor Racing (Ltd printing) 1986 M30 - Combining Graham Turner’s superb artwork with wonderfully informative and evocative texts, the cards begin the story with a 20mph Panhard in the 1890s and end with the 1985 John Player Special Lotus with carbon fibre chassis from the Lotus factory on a former wartime aerodrome at Hethel near Norwich. The early years culminate with the 1937 Mercedes-Benz W125 which established a Monaco lap record which would stand for eighteen years. After the war we find foreign makers such as Maserati, Ferrari, Matra, Alfa and Renault joined by British Vanwall, Cooper, Tyrrell, Williams and BRM, the last named featuring on no. 19 Graham Hill at the wheel winning in the rain at the Nurburgring in the 1962 World Championship. Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Doncella Issue 1987 Britains Nocturnal Wildlife Doncella Issue 1987 L30 - In the history of cigarette cards tens of thousands of different series have been issued including many hundreds on a wildlife theme, but this is one of the first and only sets devoted entirely to ‘creatures of the night’. Players Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Their Young (Channel Islands issue without ITC clause) 1937 Birds and Their Young (Channel Islands issue without ITC clause) 1937 50 - This set contains delightful colour drawings of birds with their young. Particularly lovely are the pictures of a Mute Swan and cygnets, the Starling feeding its chick from a bowl, the Skylark with its well-disguised nest, the Red-Backed Shrikes feeding worms to their young, the adorably fluffy chicks of the Redshank, the busy Robin with its chicks, a Sand Martin whose chicks are peering out of their hole eagerly awaiting food and the plump little Chiffchaff chicks about to receive a fly from mum. The numbered, non-adhesive backs are full of information about the birds, including details of their nests, how many eggs they usually have and what they eat. This was also issued in Ireland and in the UK with an adhesive back, ITC clause and an advert for an album available from tobacconists. This set was also prepared for re-issue in 1955 split into two sets of 25 cards but without adhesive backs or the album advert, but these were in fact never issued. A lovely set with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Players Dogs and Pets Dogs Pairs and Groups 1955 Dogs Pairs and Groups 1955 L25 - This set is devoted to man’s greatest companion, dogs, in a series of twenty-five paintings by the distinguished artist Arthur Wardle. Already a favourite with collectors for his portrayal of dogs in three other Players series, Wardle was commissioned to product this new set which are thought to have been printed in the early 1950s, but which for one reason or another were never actually issued with cigarettes. Concentrating on hounds, spaniels and terriers plus a few other breeds such as the Saluki, Borzois, Setters and everyone’s favourite the Labrador Retriever, each picture shows either two or three examples of the breed in a way which demonstrates the artist’s love of his subject, bringing out the character of each individual animal. The backs are highly informative about the origin of the breeds, their uses, famous owners etc. and reveal interesting facts such as Jack Russell Terriers are named after the Rev. Jack Russell or Cocker Spaniels were originally used in connection with the shooting of Woodcock from which they get their name. The artwork is superb and this is a wonderful set for anyone with a love of dogs. Cards size 79 x 62mm
