Players Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Their Young 1937 Birds and Their Young 1937 50 - This set contains delightful colour drawings of birds with their young. Particularly lovely are the pictures of a Mute Swan and cygnets, the Starling feeding its chick from a bowl, the Skylark with its well-disguised nest, the Red-Backed Shrikes feeding worms to their young, the adorably fluffy chicks of the Redshank, the busy Robin with its chicks, a Sand Martin whose chicks are peering out of their hole eagerly awaiting food and the plump little Chiffchaff chicks about to receive a fly from mum. The numbered, adhesive backs are full of information about the birds, including details of their nests, how many eggs they usually have and what they eat as well as an advert at top for an album available from tobacconists. This set was also issued in the Channel Islands and Ireland without the clause relating to Imperial Tobacco Co which appears at the bottom of the back. This set was also prepared for re-issue in 1955 split into two sets of 25 cards but without adhesive backs or the album advert, but these were in fact never issued. Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Boy Scout and Girl Guide Patrol Signs and Emblems 1933 (C.C.S. reprint 2001) Boy Scout and Girl Guide Patrol Signs and Emblems 1933 (C.C.S. reprint 2001) 50 - Originally issued in 1933 these reprints from 2001 picture both the patrol sign or emblem and the actual creature or plant on which this is based. The first half of the set are all Boy Scout patrol signs including the Beaver, Curlew and Panther and the text on the back tells us about the creature as well as which badges this patrol should specialize in and their call. For instance members of Fox patrol have a call or bark of “Ha Ha” and should study woodcraft and the habits of wildlife. The remainder of the set are Girl Guide emblems which are all bird or plant related and include Swallow, Robin, Primrose and Poppy. As with the backs of the Boy Scout cards the creature or plant is described on the reverse, but instead of a call the patrol motto such as that for Chaffinch Patrol of “Play the game and play it well” is given. This is an excellent set with cards size 68 x 36mm.

Players Flags, Arms & Maps Countries Arms and Flags 1905 (CCS reprint 2001) Countries Arms and Flags 1905 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - This charming set is also a bit of a history lesson as it includes many changes. There are countries who no longer exist or who now have different names and flags. For instance we see the elephant flag of Siam (now Thailand), Prussia, Hesse, Bavaria, Saxony etc. are now part of Germany, also the German flag of white with a black cross and eagle is today black, red and gold, Persia is now Iran, China’s red flag with a dragon now has yellow stars, Argentina’s 1905 flag had dark blue and white lines (today light blue lines with yellow sun), the Irish flag was a Union Jack with a harp and Russia ad a blue saltire on a white background (which after the red flag of the Soviet Union era is now white, blue and red). We are also used to Corea being spelt with a K and would normally refer to Tunisia not Tunis, but some of the biggest changes are to former British colonies such as New South Wales which had its own flag in 1905, but is now part of Australia, India which is shown as a British flag with emblem (now orange, white & green flag with wheel) and Canada which in this set has a Union Jack with arms in the centre, but now of course features a red maple leaf. The numbered backs contain further information and the cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Players Reprinted Series History of Navel Dress 1930 (CCS reprint 2001) History of Navel Dress 1930 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - This colourful set, as the title suggests, features sailors apparel from a 10th century Saxon Buscarle right up to a Chief Engineer of 1879. Included is a seaman’s arctic kit from 1602 recorded as being worn while searching for the North West Passage, the wide canvas breeches of the seaman of 1690, the full skirted coat of an Admiral of 1748, the costume of a gunner of 1750 taken from an inventory of effects, a ship’s caulker of 1790 who unusually wears trousers and a ship’s cook with a wooden leg. The informative text on the reverse tells us that the navy were encouraged to recruit cooks from those who had been maimed. The card for the Seaman of 1805 shows him wearing striped blue trousers and sporting a pigtail which we are told was popular between 1785 and 1823. By 1854 during the war in the Crimea we are told seamen of the Naval Brigade usually wore a Scottish style cap such as a Glengarry or Kilmarnock. A colourful set backed by interesting information. Size 68 x 36mm.
