Players Reprinted Series Regimental Standards and Cap Badges 1930 (reprint 1993 and 1997) Regimental Standards and Cap Badges 1930 (reprint 1993 and 1997) 50 - This set originally produced in 1930, was initially reprinted in 1993, and as stated on the card backs these were reprinted in 1997 for the Card Collectors Society. These attractive cards feature the regimental colours and cap badges of British regiments and are backed with comprehensive text on the reverse. Included are the Durham Light Infantry who had 37 battalions during the Great War and who’s cap badge is a bugle, the Gordon Highlanders nicknamed the “Gay Gordons” who march to the air of ‘Highland Laddie’ and the Leicestershire regiment who have a tiger on their badge honouring their service in India. Sadly many of these units are no more as they have merged in subsequent cost-cutting measures. Card size 68 x 36mm.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Endangered Wildlife Doncella Issue 1984 Britains Endangered Wildlife Doncella Issue 1984 L32 - Originally issued with Player’s Doncella brand this is a first-class series of clear colour photographs featuring species either rarely seen or benefitting from conservation efforts. The cards are a mixture of horizontal and vertical format and the backs are numbered with comprehensive and informative text concerning distribution, breeding and the reason why they are vulnerable. The backs also tell us about a free album that could be obtained from the manufacturers. Amongst the creatures featured are the Greater Horseshoe Bat which we are told can only be found in the south-west and Wales, the Natterjack Toad which used to be found on sandy heaths all over Britain and the Bittern which we are told is in worrying decline with less than 50 pairs left. This set was also issued with Player’s Grandee Cigars with the same pictures and text but with Grandee instead of Doncella. These beautiful and informative cards, size 90 x 50mm, add greatly to the appreciation of our wildlife.

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Wayside Wildlife (Flowers, Animals etc) 1988 Britains Wayside Wildlife (Flowers, Animals etc) 1988 L30 - These were issued with Player’s ‘Grandee’ cigars and were prepared by Bruce Burton a naturalist and author who had been responsible for some of Player’s other wildlife issues. These use colour photographs from a variety of sources to show with superb clarity some of the rich variety of animals, birds, reptiles, insects and plants to be found in Britain’s hedgerows and wayside verges, an environment which has become increasingly important as a wildlife reserve. The excellent pictures (6 vertical and 24 horizontal, with some having two pictures showing different aspects such as a caterpillar and butterfly) have a white border and the numbered and titled backs are full of fascinating facts. Among our favourite pictures are the Stoat which is standing on its hind legs, the beautifully marked Kestral and a stunning close-up of a Thick-legged Flower Beetle on a yellow flower. A 16-page album was also originally issued to house this set with additionally information. A very impressive set with cards 89 x 50mm.

Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Wonders of the Modern World 1985 Wonders of the Modern World 1985 M32 - Having already produced a set on wonders of the ancient world in their packets of Tom Thumb cigars Players followed this with a set of modern wonders highlighting mankind’s perpetual striving for new goals, especially in speed, space exploration and the new field of miniaturisation. These contain colour photographs within a white board and twelve are in vertical format and the rest horizontal. The backs, which are titled and numbered with green and black text, contain a comprehensive but easily-understood description with details of an album at the bottom which could be obtained from the company. The series spans an immense variety of man-made wonders including the JPS Lotus Formula 1 car, computer graphics, the Thames Flood Barrier, microchips and a robot hand. In decades to come these will serve as a record of human achievement in the 1980s. Cards size 74 x 57mm.

Players Aviation & Space International Air Liners 1936 (CCS Reprint 2001) International Air Liners 1936 (CCS Reprint 2001) 50 - The title says it all really these are reprints cards from 1936 which picture airline \r\ncompanies and their aircraft from around the world. Among those featured are Imperial Airways ‘Scylla’ which carried a crew of 5 and 39 passengers and there is a separate illustration of one of the crew preparing lunch. We also see a twin-engined Potez 62 from Air France, a German Luft Hansa Heinkel HE.111 which ominously has the swastika symbol on its tail fin, a K.L.M (Dutch) Fokker F.XXII, a stylish seaplane of the Ala Littoria (Italian) airline, a Swissair Douglas D.C2, a Aeroput (Yugoslavia) Dragon-Rapide, a Delta and Northwest Airlines Lockheed ‘Electra’ and a Pan American Airways’ clipper class flying boat. The interior of this flying boat is also pictured and we can see travellers in comfy armchairs having a smoke. We are also shown inside the cockpit of a Quantas ‘Commonwealth’ class liner which looks worryingly basic and cramped. The numbered backs give plenty of information on the company and the aircraft.
