Players Birds, Butterflies & Moths Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 Birds and Their Young 2nd Series (unissued) 1955 25 - In 1955 Players prepared two sets of 25 cards for issue. The pictures and text for both these sets was taken from the 1937 set of the same name, but split into two sets of 25 and unlike the original issue these did not have adhesive backs or the album advert. We love the pictures in this second set showing a Mute Swan and cygnets, the Starling feeding its chick from a bowl, the adorably fluffy chicks of the Redshank, a Greenfinch who looks like he has had enough of his greedy chicks and the Bullfinches using teamwork to keep their chicks fed. A delightful set with cards size 66 x 36mm.

Players Flowers and the Garden Hidden Beauties (Plant Life Highly Magnified) 1929 Hidden Beauties (Plant Life Highly Magnified) 1929 25 - Back in 1929 Players produced a series of 25 Hidden Beauties and the back of card 1 in the set explains that “objects which to our eyes may appear commonplace, uninteresting, insignificant or dull often reveal unexpected loveliness when seen under the microscope" and ”Hidden Beauties are often present where least expected.” As promised there are some fascinating close up colour images from the natural world like the leg-combs of a spider, periwinkle tongue, live mould, a maise leaf slice and flower dust (pollen). The fantastic pictures on the front are backed by a full explanation on the reverse so we learn that the air contains spores which produce plants when they find a good home so if cheese is left exposed to the ai.r it will eventually become mouldy or that as well as climbing and capturing prey spiders use their leg-combs for cleaning of both themselves and their web. This interesting set would look good in any collection. Size 68 x 36mm

Players Animals & Wildlife Britains Endangered Wildlife Grandee Issue 1984 Britains Endangered Wildlife Grandee Issue 1984 L32 - Originally issued with Player’s Grandee Cigars this is a first-class series of clear colour photographs featuring species either rarely seen or benefitting from conservation efforts. The cards are a mixture of horizontal and vertical format and the backs, printed in green and black on white, are numbered with comprehensive and informative text concerning distribution, breeding and the reason why they are vulnerable. The backs tell us about a free album that could be obtained from the manufacturers. The album was 210 x 150mm and contained an introduction by naturalist John F. Burton. Amongst the creatures featured are the Greater Horseshoe Bat which we are told can only be found in the south-west and Wales, the Natterjack Toad which used to be found on sandy heaths all over Britain and the Bittern which we are told was in worrying decline with less than 50 pairs left. This set was also issued with Player’s Doncella brand with the same pictures and text but with Doncella instead of Grandee. These beautiful and informative cards, size 90 x 50mm, add greatly to the appreciation of our wildlife.
