Hitchmans Dairies Military & Armed Forces Naval Battles 1971 Naval Battles 1971 25 - This is an interesting idea for a set and one that must have provided a challenge to those in charge of illustration, but they have made a fine job of it and the colour pictures of ships in battle action are very well done. The set begins with a look at Romans against Carthaginians at time when ships required oarsmen to get them close enough to board each other. The romp through history continues with Drake’s fire-ships, the battle of Scheveningen in the war with the Dutch, the recapture of the ‘Hermione’, the capture of the ‘Serapis’ by John Paul Jones of the American navy, H.M. Brig Acorn chasing a slaver, Nelson’s flagship at Tragalgar, the ‘Shannon’ and Chesapeake in 1813, the Peruvian ‘Huascar’ which took on two Chilean ships, the battle of Santiago in the Spanish American War, the Battle of Jutland in the First World War and a number of cards featuring incidents in the Second World War including H.M.S ‘Warspite’ in action at Narvik, the torpedo of a Japanese cruiser off Singapore and the sinking of the German warship ‘The Bismarck’. There is plenty of information on the reverse about the naval action. This set was also issued by Amalgamated Tobacco c1958, Glengettie Tea in 1971, Amaran Tea in 1971 and Sweetule Products in 1959. Colourful and educational so well worth adding to any collection. Cards size 67 x 36mm.

Hitchmans Dairies Miscellaneous Trade Cards People and Places 1971 People and Places 1971 25 - This colourful little set depicts scenes from around the world so for instance we see a map of Japan with girls in traditional dress or the Islands of Samoa with native dancers. Among the other people and places featured are Masai Warriors of East Africa, South Americans of the Andes Mountains, cowboys in the South of France, Beduins of the Middle East and Eskimos of the Arctic regions. There are some curious inclusions though like the card for India which is a vast country is full of colourful regional differences but is represented only by a Mahout and his elephant. Also considering there is a whole world to choose from why include a man and his coracle from Ireland or a bullock sleigh in Madeira and the card for Salvador does not even feature people just an erupting volcano. That said there is plenty to enjoy about these cards which are backed by interesting facts about the regions featured. This set was also issued by Askeys, Barratt & Co, Browne Bros., Clover Dairies, Gowers & Burgons, Hitchman’s Dairies, Lamberts Tea, Ringtons Ltd and Wilcocks & Wilcocks and these are the same except for the company name on the reverse. The cards are size 65 x 35mm.

Hitchmans Dairies Military & Armed Forces Aircraft of World War II (black back) 1966 Aircraft of World War II (black back) 1966 25 - In one of the most daring exploits of World War II, Guy Gibson and the crew of his 617 Squadron of Lancaster bombers attacked and breached the Ruhr dams with ‘bouncing bombs’. The resulting flood wrecked vast areas of war factories and power stations with devastating effects on German armament production. Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris, Bomber Command’s wartime chief, described the ‘Lanc’ as the greatest single factor in winning the war. More than 7,000 had been built when production ended in 1946. this iconic aircraft is one of 25 featured in Hitchman’s Aircraft of World War II, among which, needless to say are the Hurricane and Spitfire which played such an important part in the Battle of Britain. Other Allied aircraft in the set include the Mosquito, Mustang and B17 Flying Fortress, whilst the enemy’s armoury includes the Japanese Zero, a Heinkel bomber and several Messerschmitts – the 109, the 110 and the rocket-propelled 163 and the jet-propelled 262 introduced towards the end of the war, but too late to effect the outcome. Size 68 x36mm
