The cards are a mixture of caricatures and digitally altered pictures and the backs tell her story as a continuous tale over all the cards. Born in 1907 Fay’s acting career spanned 57 years and in the 1950s and 60s she also moved into TV work, appearing in episodes of Perry Mason and 77 Sunset Strip. Apparently she turned down the chance to play the older version of Rose in the hugely successful James Cameron movie ‘Titanic’ and was also asked if she would like a small part in Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong which she also rejected. Tribute Collectables Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Abbott and Costello 2010 Abbott and Costello 2010 10 - The “Bowery Boys” Bud Abbott and Lou Costello developed into a great comedy team moving from burlesque into radio then film with a long-term contract with Universal to become amongst the most popular and highly paid entertainment of World War II. More films and a weekly TV series followed, but the partnership split up in 1957. Long after their deaths they received Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their comedic careers. Tribute Collectables Films, TV, Sci Fi & Comic Art Anita Ekberg 2016 Anita Ekberg 2016 10 - In the same format as many of their other sets by this issuer, we have a series of pictures of Swedish film star Anita Ekberg. Born in 1931 she entered the Miss Universe competition in 1951 and this led to a contract with Universal Films despite her being unable to speak much English. She is perhaps best known for her film “La Dolce Vita” which made her an international sex symbol. She had well publicised affairs with many leading actors, but only married twice, although both marriages ended in divorce. She did most of her work in Italy and died there aged 83. The back of the last card tells her story, whilst the rest make up into a sectional picture of the star in sultry pose. Size 69 x 36mm.

She has won 5 Golden Globes and in 2010 was awarded her first Emmy for a guest appearance in hit USA TV show Law & Order Special Victims Unit. She also had a disco hit in 1979 and produced a critically acclaimed gospel album in 2001. In 1967 she married fellow actor Roger Smith and they have been together ever since. Betty was born Elizabeth Ruth Grable in St Louis, Missouri in December 1916 and died at just 56 years old in 1973. A major star of the 1930s and ‘40s she appeared in Tin Pan Alley (1940), Coney Island (1943) and Pin Up Girl (1944). She had a long acting career, but is best remembered for her bathing suit picture which was a favourite pin up shot of many American soldiers in the war. She became the highest paid star in Hollywood and her legs were insured through Lloyds of London. The unnumbered set makes up into a montage of glamour shots with one card overprinted with her birth and death details. Size 68 x 36mm

She was born Jane Alice Peters in Indiana and appeared in her first film at just 12 years of age. She starred alongside and later married both William Powell and Clark Gable and received an Oscar nomination for ‘My Man Godfrey’ in 1936. Tragically she died in a plane crash in 1942 just before the release of her film ‘To Be or Not to Be’. Born in 1904 to a musical family William James Basie became a household name when his band were playing the Reno Club in Kansas City. The performance was broadcast on the radio and the announcer jokingly introduced him as Count Basie to reflect titles of other popular performers such as Duke Ellington. The name stuck and the band’s success was assured. He wrote many songs, recorded with music legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra and was the first African American to win a Grammy. Tribute Collectables Pop Stars & Singers Dizzy Gillespie 2014 Dizzy Gillespie 2014 10 - John Birks (Dizzy) Gillespie, the ninth child of a local bandleader, could play the piano by the age of four, taught himself to play the trumpet and won a music scholarship. By eighteen he was a professional with the Frank Fairfax Orchestra, then a spell with Cab Calloway’s band before joining Earl Hines’ outfit. In the 1950s his trumpet was bent 45 degrees in an accident, but Dizzy loved the new sound it produced – as did his fans. Colour picture fronts, life-history serialised on the backs. Size 68 x 36mm.

Here, we learn John Wayne acquired the nickname ”Duke” when as a child he was inseparable from the family’s huge Airedale “Little Duke”. After a summer job in a studio prop room he began getting small parts in low-budget Westerns, but his career really took off when he featured in John Ford’s “Stagecoach” in 1939. One starring role followed another through the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, culminating with a Best Actor Oscar for “True Grit”. Tribute Collectables Films, TV, Sci Fi & Comic Art June Allyson 2015 June Allyson 2015 10 - Here we have a mixture of colour and black and white photos of dancer and movie star June Allyson. Born Eleanor Geisman in New York on 7th October 1917 she survived childhood injury to train as a dancer. Initially in the chorus line of ‘Sing Out The News’ she went on to appear in numerous musicals including Cole Porter’s ‘Panama Hattie’. She appeared with Gene Kelly in ‘Best Foot Forward’ and married fellow actor Dick Powell. In 1959 she starred in her own successful TV show ‘The Dupont Show with June Allyson’ and had a long stage and film career which she talked about in her 1982 autobiography. June was also well-known for her charity fundraising and she died aged 88 in July 2006. Her history is revealed on the numbered card backs. Size 68 x 36mm.

Tribute Collectables Pop Stars & Singers Screamin Jay Hawkins 2015 Screamin Jay Hawkins 2015 10 - If you have never heard of this classically trained singer and pianist then helpfully his story is told on the numbered cards backs, except for card no. 10 which just has another picture. The six times married Jay, or Jalacy Hawkins as he was born, is shown in colour pop art style pictures in the flamboyant clothing he loved. His most successful composition was “I Put a Spell on You” in 1956 which was originally intended as a ballad but owed its unique style to the intoxication of Jay and his band. He toured with The Clash and Nick Cave in the 1990s and continued to record. He died after emergency surgery in France in 2000 at 70 years of age.

The backs form a sectional picture of the star with six of them telling the story of her life and career. She was born Margaret Yvonne Middleton in Canada in September 1922 and started out in beauty pageants. She got a job as a dancer in the USA and was nearly deported before being signed to Paramount. Her big break came in 1943 when she played the lead in ‘Salome, Where She Danced’. She appeared in the movie classic ‘The Ten Commandments’ and also ‘The Sword and the Cross’, ‘Timbuktu’ and ‘McLintock’, but is best known for her role as wife Lily in the popular TV series The Munsters. She died aged 84 in January 2007, but her legend lives on in this colourful set. Size 68 x 36mm

Having taken French citizenship, she became a wartime Resistance courier and spy, for which she was awarded the Croix de Guerre. In the 1950s she returned to the States and took up the civil rights cause, but the later years were back in France and she became the first American woman to receive a state funeral in that country. Tribute Collectables Pop Stars & Singers Satchmo 2014 Satchmo 2014 15 - Adding to their card series featuring stars of film and music their latest collection celebrates the life and times of Louis Armstrong, better known as Satchmo the jazz trumpeter who we see here in colour pictures with the star’s life-story on the backs, beginning in 1900 New Orleans and an impoverished childhood which led him to take up cornet playing whilst in a care home. At 22 he joined King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band as trumpeter after which his career took off, making recordings through the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s as well as concert, TV and film appearances, possibly the most famous of which was in “High Society” with Grace Kelly, and in 1968 topped the charts with “What a Wonderful World”. She made her stage debut in 1926 as a dancer in Broadway impresario Ziegfeld’s ‘No Foolin’ and appeared as an extra in films for many years until the turning point in her career when she began dating Charlie Chaplin. He cast her as his leading lady in ‘Modern Times’ in 1936 and this led to further films such as ‘The Young in Heart’. She was considered for the Scarlett O’Hara role in Gone with the Wind and starred successfully with Bob Hope and Fred Astaire, but largely retired after her marriage to Erich Remarque. The numbered backs give a history of her life and career. Size 68 x 36mm.
