Phillips Flowers and the Garden Flower Studies 1937 Flower Studies 1937 M30 - If you are good at growing flowers you will know that the growing is only half the battle, the real challenge is arranging them. Don’t just shove them in a vase - why not get this set and pick up some tips on how to display these plants to accentuate their shapes and colours. The colour pictures on the front show you what they should look like and the backs give tips on how to achieve this. For instance Anemones should be arranged in bowls and make good dinner table decorations, ornamental grasses or bronze foliage are the ideal background for Dahlias, Violets must not be mixed with other flowers and if floated in shallow bowls will scent an entire room, Roses require a simple arrangement without other foliage and care must be taken to select colours that don’t clash, Nasturtiums should be cut in long sprays, Sweet Peas should be arranged in crystal or glass to show up in any light, Gladioli must stand at eye level and they need foliage to hide the stems etc. A lovely set size 60 x 53mm.

Phillips Royalty Special Jubilee Year Series 1935 Special Jubilee Year Series 1935 M20 - These cards were issued in celebration of the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935 and contains good colour pictures of the King and his wife Queen Mary as well as past and present members of the Royal family. These were also issued in a postcard size with larger packings of the company’s cigarettes. Included in the set is a charming picture of Queen Elizabeth as a child and the comprehensive text on the back tells us “she is not the member of the third generation nearest the throne.” It could not have been guessed at this time how quickly everything was to change as King George V was to die in January the following year and the subsequent King Edward VIII was to abdicate before the end of the year with his brother becoming King George VI and the Princess Elizabeth next in line to the throne. An excellent set with cards size 60 x 53mm.

Phillips Animals & Wildlife Animal Studies 1936 Animal Studies 1936 M30 - We just love the pictures in this set which have so much character they include the Indian Rhino, Lion, Tiger, Northern Fur Seal, Elk, Reindeer, Polar Bear, Indian Wild Boar, Elephant, Hippopotamus, Chamois, Walrus, Zebra, Tasmanian Devil, Puma, Red Kangaroo, Cheeta, and Black-backed Jackal many of which are today is in danger due to habitat loss or poaching. There are a couple of more familiar UK creatures too such as the Fox and Badger. The lovely colour pictures are backed by a small write-up about the creature concerned. For instance we learn that the Black-backed Jackal is the enemy of the sheep farmers who pay a reward of seven or sixpence per tail for its destruction. We are also told that the Puma is fond of horse-flesh, but is noted for its friendly disposition towards man – we don’t think it would be a good idea to put that to the test! The cards are size 60 x 53mm.

Phillips Royalty Famous Crowns 1938 Famous Crowns 1938 25 - When this set was reviewed in our magazine Cigarette Card News in February 2918 the reviewer wrote “Here is something really unusual: there has been no previous issue specifically devoted to this subject.” A wide range of historical crowns from around the world have been depicted including that of St. Stephen of Hungary which we are told really consists of two crowns united, the crown of Pope Julius II adorned with jewels taken from the tomb of an Empress, the crown of the former king of Brazil, the crown of Rameses II, the Imperial Crown of Russia, the 14th century Scottish crown which was found in a chest in 1817 having been lost for many years and the Tartar crown of Kasan. There is plenty of detailed information on the adhesive backs. Cards size 68 x 36mm.

Phillips Flowers and the Garden Annuals 1939 Annuals 1939 50 - If you don’t have green-fingers yourself this set may be the next best thing as it features lovely colour examples of popular annual flowers such as Antirrhinum, Candytuft, Coreopsis, Cornflower, Eschscholtzia, Godetia, Gypsophila, Lupins, Marigolds, Mimulus, Nasturtium, Nigella, Nigh-Scented Stock, Poppies, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Scabious, Sunflower, Sweet Pea etc. The backs are full of information including how its name is pronounced, when to plant and what kind of planting position is best. For instance we learn that Marigolds are easy to grow and the seed should be sown in a sunny position in either March or April. We are also told that we should not be afraid to cut the blooms as there will be plenty to spare if we pick off the seed pods to maintain a succession of flowers. This set was also issued in New Zealand, but with different planting dates. A fine set with cards size 67 x 36mm.

Phillips Dogs and Pets Our Favourites 1935 Our Favourites 1935 M48 - The current craze for looking at cute animal pictures online is not new although in the pre-computer age you had to view them on cigarette cards like these that were issued in 1935. The black and white photos picture different animals with a humorous caption underneath. For instance a dog and puppy is titled ‘A chip off the old block’, there is a picture of chimps with a camera titled ‘A perfect picture, two dogs and a bone is captioned ‘The eternal triangle’, a cat playing with a pull-cord is titled ‘Blind Devotion’, dogs in giant flowerpots are titled ‘Gone to pot’, a goat climbing up to reach some leaves has the heading ‘Stolen fruits are sweetest etc. We have to say that some of the pictures use animals in ways that would not be acceptable today such as the elephant riding a bike and chimps dressed as humans, but overall this is a lovely set. The numbered backs contain an advert for ‘De Reszke The Aristocrat of Cigarettes” but no text about the subject. Cards size 60 x 53mm

Phillips Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Famous Minors 1936 Famous Minors 1936 50 - Godfrey Phillips 1936 series of 50 Famous Minors feature coloured portraits of celebrated men and women who achieved fame whilst "under age" before they were twenty-one - and an interesting bunch they are, including the likes of W.G. Grace, Napoleon, George Washington, Isaac Newton, Dick Whittington and John Cornwell the boy V.C. This gallant-hearted minor, we are told on the card back, "was serving as a sight-setter on a warship in World Ward I when, despite being mortally wounded he stayed at his post with the gun crew dead around him because he thought he might be needed." In the tradition of Nelson's famous signal "England expects" young John Cornwell had done his duty. Nelson is also included in the set and we learn that by the age of 12 he was enduring the hardship of his first voyage. He was to become ?the greatest sea captain the world has ever known, saving England from invasion, triumphing in the Battle of Trafalgar a victory bought at the price of death, his last words being "Thank God I have done my duty. Phillips Birds, Butterflies & Moths British Butterflies Transfers 1936 British Butterflies Transfers 1936 25 - These transfers picture in colour butterflies from around the British Isles all set against a black background with their name in the white border at the bottom. The backs give information about the butterfly including such things as size and where it can be found as well as suppling instructions for how to remove the transfer from its backing. We are told to “place the transfer in water for 30 seconds, slide the design off the backing paper on to a white base, squeegee flat and leave to dry”. Frankly these cards are too nice for that sort of treatment and are best enjoyed as they are. Among the butterfly featured are the Swallowtail, Peacock, Large Garden White, Painted Lady, Common Blue, Orange Tip, Silver-Washed Fritillary, Red Admiral, Purple Emperor, Small Tortoiseshell etc. These Transfers were also available in card format with a dark blue or light blue back and were also issued by Abdulla in 1935.
