Dobie Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Four Square Book 3rd Series (nos 65-96) 1960 Four Square Book 3rd Series (nos 65-96) 1960 M32 - These cards were issued with Dobie’s “Four Square” cigarettes in 1960. Dobies were, by this time, part of the Godfrey Phillips Associated Companies group and a 1st and 2nd Series of these had already been issued in 1959. The card fronts contain colour replicas of book covers with the name of the author, title and brief description in a blue panel above the picture and the price in the bottom corner of the picture. Incidentally ‘Four-Square Books’ were published by a subsidiary company Landsborough Publications. The covers picture an incident from the book and the numbered backs give further details about the novel. Included in this batch are C.S. Forester’s “The Naval War of 1812”, Edward Abbey’s western novel “Brave Cowboy”, Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”, comedy “Lucky Jim” by Kingsley Amis, “Black Narcissus” by Rumer Godden which was turned into a successful film, the legendary “Tarzan of the Apes” by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Roman epic “The Three Legions” by Gregory Solon. There is no issuer’s name just the Four-Square Book name which often leads to confusion as there is nothing to link the series with the cigarettes with which the cards were distributed. Size 75 x 50mm.
