Ogdens Reprinted Series Story of the Lifeboat c1950 (without Ogdens) (reprint 2001) Story of the Lifeboat c1950 (without Ogdens) (reprint 2001) 50 - This set of 50 cards is unusual in that although technically a reprint it is not marked as such. This is because although prepared for Ogdens this set was never printed. The colour pictures on the fronts cover everything relating to lifeboats, from Lt. Col. Sir William Hillary the founder of the Life-boat Service to famous Coxswains, including some of the boats, pictures of actual rescues, even diagrams and pictures of how things work. The backs contain comprehensive information on the subject and a mini black and white storm picture at the bottom. Size 68 x 36mm.

Ogdens Military - General Series Air Raid Precautions 1938 (CCS reprint 1999) Air Raid Precautions 1938 (CCS reprint 1999) 50 - When Imperial Tobacco issued Air-Raid Precautions with Ogden’s cigarettes (also Churchman’s, Hignett’s and Wills’) in 1938, the then Home Secretary, Samuel Hoare, said “I commend a study of these cards to your attention.” The authorities were keen to give these simple life-saving measures the maximum possible exposure, hence the blatant coverage in ITC brands. The Ogden’s version has now been reprinted, size 68 x 36mm

Ogdens Boxing A B C of Sport 1927 (CCS Reprint 2002) A B C of Sport 1927 (CCS Reprint 2002) 25 - We now have in stock a reprint of the 1927 set by Ogdens which illustrates a sport for each letter of the alphabet except Z which appears on the same card as Y. The often humorous colour pictures are backed by a little rhyme such as “J is the jockey (cross-country of course!) who passes the winning-post after his horse – the steed had a notion, abrupt but intense, to see what it felt like to sit on a fence!” Some of the subjects chosen are odd, for instance D is deerstalking, but surely it would be less of a stretch to have illustrated dog racing and the entry for I is an Imbecile when obviously ice skater would be the logical choice. Also V and X clearly proved a challenge as the rhymes explain - V stands for Villikins a champion at spillikins and “X is a prefix that champions use when to their laurels they finally made their adieus”. Yachting was the obvious choice for Y, but the best they could come up with for Z is ‘Zest’. That said this is an entertaining little set with cards size 68 x 36mm

Ogdens Reprinted Series Smugglers & Smuggling 1931 (CCS reprint 1999) Smugglers & Smuggling 1931 (CCS reprint 1999) 50 - Differences in taxes have created opportunities to profit by evading duty on such as tobacco and spirits or trafficking illicit goods, guns, drugs etc. and it’s being going on for centuries, as we see in this card series issued in 1932 during the American Prohibition Era when speed-boats and aircraft were the latest methods used to avoid the authorities and smugglers themselves could become the victims of pirates and high-jackers. Now available as a reprint Size 68 x 36mm.

There is even a card of a sand diviner who can tell your future through the use of sand. All is explained on the numbered backs. Size 68 x 36mm

Ogdens Reprinted Series Trick Billiards 1934 (CCS reprint 2001) Trick Billiards 1934 (CCS reprint 2001) 50 - Originally issued in 1934, these reprints, feature trick shots performed by A. Newman-Mond who was an expert at performing these. Indeed there is a British Pathe clip online from 1940 showing him in action. The cards feature the green baize of the table with diagrams showing how to hit the balls to achieve the shot required and the numbered backs give full details of how to achieve this. I particularly like the ‘Potting a ball with a penny’ trick which uses a penny resting against a cushion as a cue-ball and we are told that you just had to tap the coin with the cue and the penny would roll in an arc and knock in the ball at the other end of the table. Mr Newman-Mond assures us that “with a little practice this trick can be done almost every time”. Somehow I doubt that, but it does make you want to have a go. Size 68 x 36mm.

Ogdens Reprinted Series Modern British Pottery 1925 (CCS Reprint 1999) Modern British Pottery 1925 (CCS Reprint 1999) 50 - This set originally produced in 1925 features fine colour pictures of beautiful ceramics by British manufacturers of the period. Interestingly whilst the pots are from the 1920s many of the designs and decorations hark back to an earlier era. The numbered backs are full of useful information and who knows, maybe you will see that vase Aunty Flo recently left you! The set includes Wedgwood Ware originally produced by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s which we are told is still made in Stoke-on-Trent by Messrs J. Wedgwood Ltd, Bisto Ware which copies early Chinese work, a Chelsea vase and Royal Worcester and Minton vases. In contrast to these there are some whose shape and decoration put them firmly in 1925. These include a Beacon Ware pot, a Bernard Moore rare specimen known as Peach Blow, a Sylva Lustrine vase which we are told is perfect for the modern home and a Poole Pottery jar. Size 68 x 36mm

We experience mutinies, ship-wrecks, acts of individual heroism and mysterious happenings as well as joining great voyages of exploration with the likes of Anson, Slocum, Cook and Shackleton. We meet Robinson Crusoe, the Hermit of the Cocos Islands, Nelson, and the Bounty Mutineers. And we learn the story of legendary ships such as the "Mary Celeste" and the "Great Western". Ogdens Military - General Series Air Raid Precautions 1938 Air Raid Precautions 1938 50 - The onset of WWII meant the authorities were keen to give simple life-saving measures the maximum possible exposure and Imperial Tobacco were encouraged to issue this set with a number of their different brands, so the same set was issued by Ogdens, Churchman and Hignett. The Ogdens set was also reprinted in 1999. When these were issued the then Home Secretary, Samuel Hoare, said “I commend a study of these cards to your attention.” The cards show how to select a refuge room and make it gas-proof, protecting windows, how to make a garden dug-out etc as well as defences such as anti-aircraft guns and the balloon barrage around London. The emphasis is very much on keeping yourself safe and there are a number of cards showing women dealing with an incendiary bomb in the house with a scoop and hoe or fighting fires with buckets, hand pumps or portable fire-pumps. The colour pictures and informative text really highlight the frightening dangers the country was now facing, but a spirit of resilience also shines through, epitomised by the couple in rubber clothing and gas-masks. Naturally they should be cowering their shelter but the card informs us that “prudent persons, if forced to go outdoors during raids should provide themselves” in addition to gas masks, with “rubber or oilskin coats and hats and rubber boots”. A fantastic glimpse at war on the home front with cards size 68 x 36mm. This set was also issued by Wills and Churchman.

Ogdens Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 Actors Natural and Character Studies 1938 50 - 1938 and Hollywood was booming. New cinemas were springing up everywhere, new colour photography was bringing greater realism to the silver screen and the public flocked to picture palaces in their droves. Film star cigarette card sets were the latest craze for collectors, and Ogdens joined the bonanza, but their set had a novel approach. Each card has two pictures, one of the star’s natural pose, the other showing him or her in character mode. Examples are W.C. Field (as Mr. Micawber), Boris Karloff (“The Mummy”), George Robey, Gracie Fields, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, Mr Douglas Bying (cast as Queen Elizabeth!) and Florence Desmond on no. 9 playing Elizabeth Bergner who is pictured on no. 2. An absolutely brilliant set. This set was also issued by Hignetts. Size 68 x 36mm

Ogdens Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards How to Swim 1935 How to Swim 1935 50 - Back in 1935, when Ogdens produced this set of 50 cards titled How to Swim, many people did not have the opportunity to learn to swim at school or with their families so this set would have been an invaluable learning tool. The swimming methods covered are the front and back crawl, double armed backstroke and breast stroke. The fronts bear colour pictures of ladies in swimsuits and matching bathing caps executing various swimming methods and the action is broken down into sections so, for instance, there are twelve cards for the breast stroke with the first four showing the leg positions, then we move on to the arm positions and breathing before putting it all together. The last couple of cards show inter-timing of arms and legs plus isolated limb action. The ladies appear in a different bathing costume for each of the different swimming styles and the backs are full of step-by-step instructions to help you achieve the perfect technique. With these cards you can have no excuse for not getting in the water! The same set was also issued by Higgnets. Size 68 x 36mm
