Anstie Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Sectional Series Clifton Suspension Bridge 1938 Sectional Series Clifton Suspension Bridge 1938 10 - This is a lovely sectional series of colour drawings that form one large picture of the beautiful Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the River Avon in Bristol. This bridge was based on original designs by master engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (as amended by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw) and was opened in 1864. The iconic structure links Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset and contains a toll bridge which raises money for its maintenance. The bridge is 245 feet above high-water level and is used by 4 million vehicles a year. The backs give details about the bridge and we are told that “when the picture has been completely formed the sections being gummed at back may be easily mounted or fixed on a piece of stiff paper or cardboard” – not something we would recommend now! The card backs also have the trade mark of E & W Anstie Litd who’s tobacco factory in Devizes we are told has been ‘established over 200 years’. A nice set with cards size 67 x 36mm.

Anstie Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Places of Interest Varnished Front 1939 Places of Interest Varnished Front 1939 40 - This series of black and white pictures with varnished fronts, as the title might suggest, show us buildings and views from England and Wales with plenty of interesting information on the reverse. For instance we learn that the Dew Pond, Hindover, Sussex was supplied with water by condensation of the thick mists and heavy dews frequent upon the downs on cool summer nights or that Toplady the curate of Blagdon wrote the hymn “Rock of Ages..” whilst sheltering from a storm at Burrington Combe in Somerset. Also included are St. Michael’s Mount, Durdle Door, Lulworth, the George Inn at Norton St. Philip, the Roman Bath at Bath, Wye Bridge in Hereford, Chepstow Castle in Monmouth, Shakespeare’s House in Stratford-on-Avon, The Pavilion at Brighton, Dover Castle and the White Horse of Westbury. This was also originally available with an unvarnished front. An interesting set with cards size 67 x 37mm
