Upper Deck Football Englands Qualifying Campaign (World Cup) 1st Series Nos. 1 to 45 1997 Englands Qualifying Campaign (World Cup) 1st Series Nos. 1 to 45 1997 LT45 - Issued in 1997 this excellent set looks at the England build up to the up-coming World Cup which was held in France in 1998. This limited edition box set with checklist back contains a large size team photo of Glen Hoddle’s team with the 1966 England World Cup champions on the reverse. The cards inside are split into sections with the first batch, numbered 1 to 8 are all managers beginning with Sir Alf Ramsey and ending with the then manager Glen Hoddle, the second batch between 9 and 30 are the 1997 squad, then numbers 31 to 38 are England Legends who include Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Kevin Keegan and Gary Lineker then there are 7 cards headed ‘Just Get There’. These cards contain action pictures following their long road to the World Cup, beginning with the 1996 match against Moldova. With the exception of some of the Legends cards the set is in colour with informative text on the reverse. For instance we are told that Paul Ince was ‘the first black England captain’ and that Teddy Sherringham’s ‘clever footballing brain makes up for a lack of pace’. A 2nd Series was also issued in 1998. The cards are size 89 x 64mm.

Nos. 46 to 55 are “great matches” from England’s World Cup victory in 1966 to beating Holland 4-1 in Euro ’96. Then come eight “worst moments” ending with England’s home defeat by Italy in the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, followed by “on the edge” featuring up-and-coming youngsters such as Ferdinand, Butt, Owen and Heskey. The series rounds off with five “centurions” capped a hundred times or more, Wembley, trophies and a couple of checklists. Size 89 x 64mm.
