Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Chinese Pottery and Porcelain Series 1 (4 different numbers fron the set of 5 minus number 5) c1915 (Canvas Issue) Chinese Pottery and Porcelain Series 1 (4 different numbers fron the set of 5 minus number 5) c1915 (Canvas Issue) EL4 out of 5 - Issued with the company’s ‘Spinet’ cigarettes these contain colour pictures (set against a dark brown background) of Chinese pottery and porcelain held institutions such as the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum etc. The images are printed on canvas with details of the object printed on the back. This is an extra-large part-set of 4 out of 5 (Minus No 5) and we have to say the larger format really show-cases the subjects admirably. The four in this part set are a jar from the late Yung Cheng (1723-35) period, a dragon vase from the Chia Ching (1522-66) dynasty, a Wan Li period vase (1573-1619) and a Tang Dynasty (618-906) statue of a Buddhist Apostle. The canvases are 133 x 110mm.

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Our Empire 1929 Our Empire 1929 30 - You might imagine from the title this is a set of lovely views from places within the British empire, but you would be wrong. In fact these are photos of leaders, members of parliament etc. Beginning with King George V and his two sons the set then pictures Westminster, the Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald and other members of the Labour government including Margaret Bondfield the first woman to become a member of the Cabinet (that’s a good quiz question for you!) and the Rt. Hon. Wedgwood Benn as well as statesmen and leaders from New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Australia. There is plenty of informative text on the backs which gives a background to an interesting time when for the first time Britain had a Labour government. This set iwas issued in a larger format with cards size 78 x 67mm, but this set is size 66 x 38mm.

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of Interest 1st Series Sunripe and Spinet Ovals back 1938 Views of Interest 1st Series Sunripe and Spinet Ovals back 1938 L48 - Back in 1938 when we originally reviewed this set we wrote “it is difficult to imagine better cards of this type than these beautifully hand-coloured real photos” and we would stand by that statement today. Included in this set are well-known landmarks like the Clifton Suspension Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Blackpool Tower, Buckingham Palace, York Minster, Caernarvon Castle and the Liver Building in Liverpool, but also included are natural wonders and views like Cheddar Gorge, Kynance Cove and Derwentwater as well as views of Cardiff, Sheffield, Hull and Newcastle which don’t often appear on cards. These must have proved popular as Hill continued with another four series of different views in 1938 and 1939. The numbered backs give plenty of information about the featured subject and “issued with Sunripe & Spinet Oval Cigarettes”, but was also issued with “The Spinet House” instead. A fine set with cards size 78 x 64mm

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Views of Interest 2nd Series 1938 Views of Interest 2nd Series 1938 L48 - Britain’s turbulent history has left us with a rich legacy of castles. Their story provides a fascinating insight into the wars and power-struggles this country has endured down through the centuries and there is no better presentation of these amazing structures than the 48 castles featured in this set. Nowadays most are open to the public, so let’s have a quick look at some – Norwich with its magnificent Norman keep houses a wonderful museum, Lancaster (a goal until a few years ago), Dover (a landmark for travellers from the continent), Nottingham (familiar to collectors as the John Player trademark), Tintagel (with its Arthurian connections), Taunton (re-opened as an award winning museum) and Windsor (now fully restored following that terrible fire). This set of hand-coloured photos issued in 1938 is highly recommended. Size 82 x 63mm

Hill Ships & Shipping Famous Ships Front varnished 1940 Famous Ships Front varnished 1940 50 - When these cards appeared in 1940 we described them as “a fine series produced in colour and full of interest at the present time. Fighting ships are well represented by such vessels as the Hood and the new aircraft carrier Illustrious. Commercial craft include crack liners such as the Queen Elizabeth and the now notorious Bremen. There are historic ships such as the Mayflower and the Victory, and vessels, which took part in the 1914-18 conflict. Altogether a valuable contribution to maritime history”. Also here is the ill-fated Lusitania and the Titanic. The Hood would join them in the ocean depths when she was sunk in 1942. The Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary were to end their days in Hong Kong and California. The Cutty Sark at Greenwich and the Victory at Portsmouth are reminders of Britain’s maritime heritage, as indeed is this fine set of cards. This set was also issued with a matt front. Size 63 x 38mm

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Worlds Masterpieces inscribed 2nd Series 1915 Worlds Masterpieces inscribed 2nd Series 1915 25 - There are not many pre-Great War sets as modestly priced as this little series of twenty-five photogravures. Although titled ‘Second Series’ there was no first series issued and it is thought to have been a continuation of their Famous Pictures series issued in 1913. The pictures begin with portraits of the King and Queen and then continues with classic paintings from galleries around the world with the emphasis on 19th century artists. These include ‘Sea Scouts of the Empire by marine artist Bernard Gribble, ‘The Judgement of Paris’ by Rubens, Raphael’s ‘The Sistine Manonna’, ‘The Knight Errant’ by Sir John Everett Millias, Edward Burne-Jones’ ‘King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, Lord Frederick Leighton’s ‘Bath of Psyche’, ‘Charles I’ by Peter Lely, Constable’s ‘The Valley Farm’, Gainsborough’s ‘The Market Cart’, Turner’s ‘Crossing the Brook’, ‘A Cavalier’ by J.L.E. Meissonier, ‘The Horse Feeder’ by George Morland and ‘The Music Lesson’ by E. Muenier. The backs bear intelligent texts with alternate cards advertising ‘Badminton’ or ‘Spinet’ tobaccos. An interesting set with cards size 69 x 41mm

Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Puzzle Series 1937 Puzzle Series 1937 50 - Hill's 50 Puzzle Series, issued in 1937. The title itself is a puzzle, because they subjects are nearly all magical tricks rather than puzzles and indeed when a second printing came out in 1938 it was re-titled "Magical Puzzles". The pictures illustrate the magician's stock in trade using string, coins, cards, matches, glasses, handkerchiefs etc., as props with a detailed explanation on the card backs so that, with a little practice and some sleight of hand, you too can amaze your friends! Hill Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Crystal Palace Souvenir Varnished Front 1937 Crystal Palace Souvenir Varnished Front 1937 40 - These cards were issued following the disastrous fire in November 1936 which destroyed this famous London landmark and the informative text on the reverse tells us that although the fire was attended by sixty-five fire engines and six hundred firemen they could not save the building. The last couple of cards picture the charred remains, but the set begins with a picture of the extraordinary building designed by Sir Joseph Paxton which was erected in Hyde Park. The wonderful glass structure, nicknamed the ‘Crystal Palace’, was home to the Great Exhibition of 1851 which showcased exhibits from around the world as well as British manufacturing talent and a host of entertainment. Following the success of this Exhibition when it was over the decision was taken to move the building from Hyde Park to land at Sydenham and it was re-erected there in 1852 where it became a place of entertainment where people visited to view displays, listen to concerts, watch fire-works or football etc. This set pictures in black and white interesting rooms, some of the entertainments, foreign visitors and some of the ups and downs of its long history. There is plenty of information on the card backs making this a worthy souvenir. These cards have a varnished front, but a matt front version was also issued in 1936. Size 66 x 37mm
