Lea Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Famous Views glossy front 1936 Famous Views glossy front 1936 48 - Between 1906 and 1938 the Manchester firm of R & J Lea issued several popular card series with their well-known cigarette brands Chairman, Recorder and Tournament. This particular series was issued in 1936 and titled “Famous Views” and was issued with Chairman Juniors Cigarettes. These contain splendid real black and white photos with interesting facts on the back, but the title is perhaps misleading as the first six cards are devoted to the funeral of H.M. King George V, including the last journey from King’s Cross, the lying in-state in Westminster Hall, the procession and service in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor where King Edward VIII sprinkled earth from Frogmore on his father’s coffin. The next seventeen cards are sights of London such as Piccadilly Circus and the Mansion House, followed by views, mostly of famous buildings, around Britain finishing with three of Manchester Lea’s home city including the Royal Exchange. The title maybe somewhat misleading as to the contents and we suspect the company may have substituted some of the original subjects at the last minute in order to cover the royal event swiftly within a series virtually ready for release when the King died in January. Whether this is indeed the case we shall never know, but this is an unusual and highly informative set which was also issued in a medium size (76 x 51mm). These cards are size 68 x 36mm.
