Amaran Tea Miscellaneous Trade Cards The Circus 1968 The Circus 1968 25 - This fascinating little set covers some of the history of the circus including Philip Astley’s amphitheatre where amazing riding feats were performed, ancient costumes and famous characters from the past well as covering everyday circus life in the late 1960s. What will surprise modern audiences is the range of different animal acts that were acceptable then, including chimps, lions, sealions, elephants, tigers, horses and even what looks like polar bears. There are glimpses behind the scenes showing circus children helping to move a vehicle and horses at rest as well as circus acts such as knife-throwing, trapeze acrobats, bareback riders, clowns, wire walkers, balancing acts and trick cyclists. With informative text on the back and nice colour pictures on the front this would make an excellent addition to any collection. Cards size 68 x 36mm

Amaran Tea Dogs and Pets Dogs Heads 1965 Dogs Heads 1965 25 - You don’t have to be a dog lover to appreciate this set as the colour drawings of canine heads are full of character. There is a particularly lovely drawing of a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier, but also included are a Kerry Blue Terrier, Alstatian, English Sprinter Spaniel, Gordon Setter, Scottish Terrier, Saluki, Peckingese, Borzoi, Dalmation, Bloodhound, Boxer, Mastiff, Greyhound, Deerhound, Boston Terrier, Airedale Terrier, Scottish Collie, Foxhound, Miniature Poodle, Welsh Corgi, Pointer, Golden Retriever, English Setter and Chow Chow. The numbered backs give plenty of information on the breed for instance the Greyhound card tells us that they are of very ancient origin and their sense of smell is poor so they chase prey entirely by sight and their build is streamlined for speed. This set was also issued by G. Payne and Bishops Stortford Dairies – see website for availability. Size 68 x 36mm.

Amaran Tea Flags, Arms & Maps Flags and Emblems 1964 Flags and Emblems 1964 25 - As the title suggests this set contains flags and emblems, but there are some unusual inclusions and arrangements in this set. For instance the first flag is that of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, who colours are made up of the blue of the ocean and a compass rose in a white circle signifying unity and peace. Also included is the S.H.A.P.E flag, the initials standing for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe, the Admiralty flag, the flag of Trinity House who are responsible for all lighthouses and the flag of the Cinque Ports which is flown by the Lord Warden who at the time this set was issued by Winston Churchill. Also curious is the way badges are grouped together on one card, for instance Gibraltar and Malta are both shown on the last card, but they have nothing in common except they are both in the Med and why does Nepal have its own card, but Nigeria and Sierra Leone share a card? Also why Bolivia or Western Samoa but no Australia, America or New Zealand? Despite these puzzles this is a good set containing colourful cards with plenty of facts on the reverse. Size 68 x 36mm. This set was also issued in 1961 by Goodies Ltd

Amaran Tea Stamps, Coins & Banknotes Coins of the World 1965 Coins of the World 1965 25 - Looking at this set makes you realise how many currencies have changed over the years especially as many in this set date from the 1920s and ‘30s rather than the 1960s when this was issue. The Euro has now seen the end of the likes of the Franc, Mark and Escudos and our own currency also changed with the advent of decimalization so these are a nice historical record. What we like about this set is that as well as the depiction of a relevant coin the card also pictures a typical scene, such as the Great Wall of China alongside their 1927 1 dollar piece or the Statue of Liberty alongside a 1 dime coin. Interestingly as well as major countries the set also includes a Jersey coin which is pictured alongside Corbière lighthouse. This series was also produced by C.E.D.E Ltd in 1956 and Amalgamated Tobacco in 1960. An interesting set with cards size 67 x 36mm.
