Cope Military - General Series The Worlds Police 1935 (reprint 2005) The Worlds Police 1935 (reprint 2005) 25 - This set was originally issued in 1935. This set faithfully reproduces the colour pictures but the backs are printed in black instead of blue. Some things haven’t changed much, the text for the Palestine constable says of the Arabs and Jews “both denominations resort to violence in an effort to settle their age old quarrel”, whilst for Iraq we learn “the population is prone to violence”. Size 69 x 36mm.

Cope Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Toy Models (The Country Fair) c1930 Toy Models (The Country Fair) c1930 L25 - These 25 cards are delightful, they were designed to be cut out so you could make your own old fashioned fair. The fronts contain lovely colour pictures with instructions on how to cut them out and put them together so they stand up. Amongst the charming stalls you could reproduce are the Cokernut Shy (which today we would spell coconut), Punch and Judy, Houpla, Ginger-Beer stall and a Toffee stand. Also included are the turnstile with entry priced at 3d each, a colourful Merry-Go-Round, Swings, Performing Donkeys, a Gipsy Fortune Teller, Hurdy-Gurdy machine complete with monkey, Ice-Cream Barrow, Water Chute, Photographer with tripod camera and the Fat Lady’s Tent (most inappropriate these days) where the sign says she weighs “under 2 ½ ton”! A curious inclusion is the Motor Dragon, which presumably was a dragon disguised motor which drove around the fairground?

Cope Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Castles 1939 Castles 1939 25 - The Liverpool firm of Cope Bros. was founded in 1842 (taking over Richard Lloyd of London in 1902) and from 1897 to 1917 produced series after series of high quality cards. They resumed issuing cards in 1923 and continued right through until after the outbreak of World War II. The last of these, Castles, under the joint Cope Bros./Lloyd name, came out in January 1940 and almost immediately afterwards the L.C.C.C. received a letter from the Secretary of Copes stating “the circulation of cigarette cards has not ceased” although was we now know they did not issue any other cards. These cards are printed in a brown colour and varnished to resemble photographs. Maxstoke, Donnington, Tantallon, Newark and Lowther are among the lesser known castles, but the set also includes the Tower of London, Windsor, Balmoral, Warwick, Conway, Corfe, Arundel, Edinburgh, Stirling etc. Among the interesting facts on the reverse are that spies were executed in the Tower during the First World War and that the Earl of Leicester entertained Queen Elizabeth I at his Kenilworth castle for 17 days at the expense of £1,000 a day. The set encapsulates wonderful episodes from Britain’s history and the cards are size 68 x 38mm.
