Greater Manchester Police Stamps, Coins & Banknotes British Stamps 1986 British Stamps 1986 EL15 - Depicting British commemorative stamps in colour within a black border and with the title of the stamp at the bottom these were issued by Greater Manchester Police as one of a series of “cop-a-card” schemes designed to keep children safe and away from trouble. The backs bear the force logo and contain a crime prevention hint such as “Only mugs mess with drugs” or “It’s vital to postcard your cycle” as well as spaces to include details of your own postcode and that of the nearest police station. There is an acknowledgement to the Post Office at the bottom who sponsored the cards. These cards were only available direct from police officers and it was hoped would promote better relations between police and young people. Among the stamps portrayed is a 22p showing the Giotto spacecraft entering the tail of a comet, two stamps from the set commemorating British youth organisations picturing Guides, Brownies and Scouts, stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan Police, four cards featuring book illustrations celebrating the International Year of the Child and cards commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Great Western Railway. Likely to appeal to both collectors of stamps and cartophilists these cards are size 102 x 62mm.

Greater Manchester Police Rugby Union & League Riversiders Wigan R.F.C. 1990 Riversiders Wigan R.F.C. 1990 L24 - Now more often known as Wigan Warriors, Wigan RLFC is a professional Rugby League side who have been more successful than any other team in Rugby League history and have a huge following. It is no surprise then that Greater Manchester Police used pictures of the players to promote their tips for children. The backs give a Riversider’s tip such as “Loose Ball is when during play the ball is not held by a player and not being scrummaged” with the police tip at the bottom “Don’t play ball in the street. Loose balls in this area can cause serious accidents”. There are excellent colour pictures on the front of players, manager and team giving their names and position as well as the logo and name of Milliken Contract Carpets who were one of the sponsors. A black and white badge of the Greater Manchester Police is pictured in the middle of the card backs and the first card also pictures this in colour on the front together with the badges of the club and carpet firm. A fine Rugby League set with cards 105 x 60mm.
