Drapkin Military & Armed Forces Soldiers and Their Uniforms (die cut) mixed printings (23 different cards from the set of 25) 1914 Soldiers and Their Uniforms (die cut) mixed printings (23 different cards from the set of 25) 1914 L23 out of 25 - In 1914, during the first year of the Great War, the London based manufacturer Major Drapkin issued with their Crayol Virginia and Karam Turkish cigarettes a series of 25 Soldiers in Uniform, die-cut to shape ? an unusual presentation and highly effective in enhancing the realism of the figures. In recognition of the role of our allies, the subjects include two Belgian, four French and four Russian, the remaining fifteen being British regiments among them The Black Watch, Durham Light Infantry, the Grenadier, Irish and Scots Guards, South Wales Borderers, The Royal Engineers and the Royal Field Artillery, each with a brief history on the back. (The set is minus the First Life Guards and The South Wales Borderers)

Drapkin Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Girls of Many Lands 1929 Girls of Many Lands 1929 M50 - Drapkin or Major Drapkin & Co. were founded in London in 1898 and issued cards from 1912 to 1934, but by 1929 when this set was issued they were a branch of the United Kingdom Tobacco Co. or so it says on the card backs. This distinctive set contains colourful, almost art-deco head and shoulders pictures of young women in national costume, set against a black background and casts the net wide with a higher proportion of non-European subjects than is often the case in such sets. The backs are numbered and arranged alphabetically from Afghanistan to Wales with descriptions of the national dress of each. Odd inclusions are the Australian card which pictures a lady of European heritage with a scarf who is described as making her own clothes and being a “splendid pal” and the Canadian card which says “the women have plenty of time for outside interests”! In case you were wondering the English girl wears a beret style hat and striped top and is described as “noted for her love of sport.. and a keen lover of animals”. An interesting set with cards size 77 x 53mm

Drapkin Military - General Series Celebrities of the Great War Printed Back 1916 Celebrities of the Great War Printed Back 1916 36 - In 1916, the third year of World War I, Major Drapkin & Co. issued a series of 36 photocards known as “Celebrities of the Great War”. Needless to say these were all Allied leaders and include heads of state such as King George V, the Czar of Russia and the President of France, political leaders such as Prime Minister Asquith and South African Premier Botha, and several Indian Maharajas. The others are military men, among them Admirals Beatty and Jellicoe, General Haig and Field Marshalls French and Kitchener, the last-named being perhaps the best-known face of the war for his appearance on the “Your Country Needs You” recruitment posters. Also in the mix is Winston Churchill, at that time First Lord of The Admiralty. The card backs tell of the subjects’ careers and achievements and we learn that two were currently prisoners of the Germans. A wonderful souvenir of the war. Make sure you snap this up for your collection. Size 70 x 42mm
