Fax Pax Miscellaneous Trade Cards Fables 1988 (1995 redesign presentation box) Fables 1988 (1995 redesign presentation box) L36 - This set of 36 cards with rounded corners feature modern translations of well-known fables, mainly Aesop’s classics, charmingly illustrated by Gesine Mahoney. The pastel pictures are beautifully drawn and the backs tell the fable and give the moral at the bottom. For instance The Dog and his Bone shows the dog and his reflection in the water and the back tells the tale with the moral at the end explained i.e. If you are too greedy you may end up with nothing. I must admit I had not heard of some of these like the Pedler and the Donkey or the Dog in the Manger, but it’s a fascinating set beautifully drawn. Size 102 x 64mm

The cards come in their own special box and are part of the Fax Pax range of ‘Knowledge in a Nutshell’ sets. Among the gems featured are Woburn Abbey the first house to be developed as a tourist attraction, Traquair House in the Scottish borders, the iconic St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, George the IV’s extravagantly over-the-top Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Powis Castle in Wales, Osborne House on the Isle of Wight designed by Prince Albert, Longleat in Wiltshire better known these days for its safari park, Knowle in Kent which is one of the largest, Hatfield House in Hertfordshire where Elizabeth I was living when she became queen, Chatsworth in Derbyshire which has the highest fountain in the world, Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire where Winston Churchill was born, Blickling Hall in Norfolk once owned by the family of Anne Boleyn and Castle Howard in Yorkshire where ‘Brideshead Revisited’ was filmed. Fax Pax Royalty Kings and Queens 1985 Kings and Queens 1985 L40 - This excellent set looking at English royalty comes in its own box and is part of the Fax Pax range of ‘Knowledge in a Nutshell’ sets which are packed full of information. The colour images begin with Queen Elizabeth II and go right back to 1066 when William I (better known as William the Conqueror) seized power. The picture of William is taken from the Bayeux Tapestry, but other images are from monuments, stained glass and coins as well as the usual paintings. This is a fine history set with plenty of facts about the king or queen on the reverse. For instance we learn that George II (1727-1760) hated both his father and his own son and held a dislike for everything English preferring to spend much of his time in Germany or that William II (1087-1100) was killed while hunting in the New Forest. A fine historical set with cards size 102 x 64mm.
