Ardath Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Film Stars Series GP2 1939 Film Stars Series GP2 1939 M44 - The cards show black and white pictures of glamorous ladies including big names such as Betty Grable, Ann Sheridan, Joan Blondell and Olivia De Havilland. ‘Film Stars’ is a misnomer as some, like Helena Garvin, are models, whilst others are showgirls from the Windmill Theatre. The rest are not well-known although some appeared in films such as singer Shirley Ross who was in ‘Some Like It Hot’. It says something about how obscure many are that Monica Bishop is listed as ‘able to stand-in for well-known star Victoria Hopper’? and Muriel Baron is a pantomime boy. Size 80 x 56mm.

Ardath Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Film Stars and General Interest Photocards Group J 1938 Film Stars and General Interest Photocards Group J 1938 M22 - Ardath produced a number of photographic black and white series picturing general interest subjects and this Group J selection is a mixture of film stars and miscellaneous shots. Issued just before the start of WWII the planes and ships such as the Hawker “Hurricane”, Supermarine “Spitfire” (both heroes of the Battle of Britain) and H.M.S. “Rodney” (which went on to play a major role in the sinking of the “Bismarck”) and H.M.S. “Intrepid” (sunk 1943) would soon be in the thick of the fighting, but elsewhere in the set there is a shot of the newly opened Mersey Tunnel, The “Railton Special” in which John Cobb broke the land speed record in 1938, a Nairn Transport motor coach which operated between Damascus and Baghdad, the L.M.S. “Coronation Scot” and L.N.E.R “Coronation” locomotives, band leader Jack Hylton, film stars such as Sabu, Robert Taylor, Nan Grey and Gloria Blondell and amateur ice skater Megan Taylor. All in all there should be something for everyone and with good quality pictures and informative text on the back these are worthy of any collection. Cards size 80 x 55mm.

Ardath Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Film, Stage and Radio Stars 1935 Film, Stage and Radio Stars 1935 EL25 - The head and shoulders sepia photo-portraits feature many of the most popular figures of the entertainment world in the mid-1930s including great Hollywood icons such as Garbo, Dietrich, Clarke Gable, Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers, interspersed with British radio favourites like Henry Hall, Elsie and Doris Waters (Gert and Daisy), Stanley Holloway, Gracie Fields and Noel Coward. The issue date, 1935, is confirmed by reference to Leslie Howard’s card which says “aged 42 this tall Adonis is a strong swimmer, keen cricketer and polo player”. Leslie’s life was cut short in a wartime air crash. Size 98 x 64mm

Ardath Military - General Series Life in the Services 1938 Life in the Services 1938 50 - This set was issued just before the start of the Second World War and paints a somewhat glowing picture of life in the British services which we are sure many of those who took part in that conflict would dispute. The R.A.F for instance “offers all the advantages of a healthy, open-air existence”, the Royal Navy “security of employment, good pay and a varied and interesting life” and the Army “offers exceptional advantages such as foreign travel and liberal holidays. Well for many the foreign travel part was true, but the liberal holidays still awaited! These cards are all based on black and white photographs supplied by the War Department and were designed to show what a happy, active and rewarding life awaited recruits to the armed forces. Good clear pictures with comprehensive texts on the adhesive backs make this an interesting and historical set. The cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Ardath Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Proverbs 1936 Proverbs 1936 25 - Packed in packets of Ardath’s ‘Cork Tipped’ and ‘State Express 333’ these are well-known proverbs – A fool and his money..A stich in time..,Birds of a feather..,It’s an ill wind.. and so on, but these are not dry old sayings as they are brought to life in humorous 1930s contexts by superb colour illustrations. What a pity the artist’s name isn’t acknowledged. “The drawings are very clever and the series is interesting and amusing” wrote the new issues editor in our magazine at the time and that’s true enough, but they deserve more praise that that. When you’ve finished enjoying the pictures, read the backs which delve into the origins of the proverb then carry us forward to the twentieth century. Highly recommended these cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Ardath Royalty Silver Jubilee 1935 Silver Jubilee 1935 50 - Queen Elizabeth II was just nine years old when her grandfather died in January, 1936. George V’s death was all the more poignant for the fact that just seven months earlier he had celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his coronation, an event marked by this set. The series sets the scene by beginning with cards on Queen Victoria, Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, before devoting twelve cards to picturing George V from his days at the age of twenty as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy over a period of fifty years to May, 1935 with the narrative backs taking us from his birth at Marlboro’ House through to broadcasting his message to the Empire on Christmas Day 1934. Queen Mary receives similar treatment from her birth at Kensington Palace in 1867 to the launch of the liner Queen Mary in 1934. Heir to the throne, Edward, Prince of Wales comes next, but as we know he was to abdicate less than a year after his father’s death, making way for his brother Albert to succeed to the throne as King George VI, presented in this series as the Duke of York, together with his wife Elizabeth and their children Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose. An historic set to take away. Size 68 x 36mm

Ardath Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Your Birthday Tells Your Fortune 1937 Your Birthday Tells Your Fortune 1937 50 - There's a card for each day of the month with the front picturing a famous person whose birthday falls on that date whilst the back gives birthday portents. Nine precious stone cards follow these, each covering three or four dates, with the back how that stone rules the person's life. Next come nine Roman gods and goddesses on different colour backgrounds and the ?destiny colour cards' relating to the same groups of dates. The final card, no. 50, bears a bouquet of nine flowers listed on the back against the dates to which they refer. This is a cleverly thought out and well-produced set which will entertain ? as it says on the back "this series is issued solely for amusement". Size 68 x 36mm

Ardath Dogs and Pets Champion Dogs 1934 Champion Dogs 1934 EL25 - Issued in 1934 these charming cards, measuring 95 x 67mm, featuring colour pictures of dogs superimposed on an appropriate background. All are award-winning specimens and their names and those of their owners are given on the front. The numbered backs contain a simple black outline of the breed together with a list of requirements that are necessary if you want to produce a winner. For instance, we are told that a Cocker Spaniel’s coat must be flat and silky and never curly and the legs of the Bull Terrier must be big-boned, but not coarse, with cat like feet! Interestingly the colour of the Golden Retriever known as ‘Donkelve Jester’ is very dark, almost brown, and whilst this is perfectly acceptable these days most people associate the breed with the pale golden colour. Athos the Bull-Mastiff is particularly endearing with his bright eyes, whilst Kipyard Taffy the Smooth Fox Terrier is clearly standing to attention focused on his owner or perhaps a treat. Among the featured dogs are a Greyhound, Fox Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Pekingese, Alsatian, Irish Setter, Airedale Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Chow-Chow, Bulldog Golden Retriever, Dalmatian, Great Dane, West Highland White Terrier, Collie and Old English Sheepdog. These really are lovely cards for any dog lover. Size 95 x 67mm.

Also featured is Tom Green, the record-breaking walker who won Olympic gold in 1932 at the age of 46 and Ted Phelps the rower who won the historic Doggett’s Coat and Badge race in 1930, bringing to eight the victories for the Phelps family and talking of eight, what about Glasgow Celtic’s centre-forward J.
