Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Britain from the Air 1939 Britain from the Air 1939 M48 - The pictures in this set may be black and white, but they are simply stunning and full of detail. They include popular tourist spots and important buildings which look even more impressive when seen from the skies. Included are Blackpool with its famous tower and people on the beach who are as small as ants, the tennis courts at Wimbledon, Beachy Head, Chesil Bank, Regatta Island at Henley, Warwick Castle, Torquay, Salisbury Cathedral, Nottingham city centre, Southend on Sea with several sailing boats in shot, a dramatic view of Brunel’s bridge over the Avon Gorge which is casting a shadow, the Royal Albert Hall, Walmer Castle, Buckingham Palace, Holyrood Palace, the fishing village of Mousehole, Tower Bridge, Conway Castle a view of the old Wembley Stadium taken in 1937 during the Festival of Youth and an infra-red photograph of the Isle of Wight as you have never seen it before. There is also plenty of interesting information on the card backs, but card number 5 picturing the Watford By-Pass is particularly prophetic showing us the junction and explaining how this “shows how the familiar roundabout looks to the airman” – as we now know it was not long before airmen began using these roads and landmarks for navigation during the 2nd World War. A lovely set with cards size 77 x 52mm

Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Coastwise 1939 Coastwise 1939 M48 - Goodness know how many miles would be involved if you were to go around Britain’s coast with all the ins and outs, plus hundreds of islands large and small. Its diversity from sheer cliffs to wide expanses of golden sands is aptly demonstrated in this set, which was also issued by Gallaher Limited and Peter Jackson. Many of the views have hardly changed over the years especially some of the quiet West Country coves like Cadgwith and Combe Martin or the front at Frinton, but where you really notice a difference is in the fishing ports like Yarmouth and Lowestoft which are bustling with ships whereas today there are just the odd one or two and just look at all the trams lined up a Liverpool Pier with a liner in the background!. The charming black and white photos are backed by plenty of text, for instance card 15 explains that the picture shows a rescue in progress of the Italian ship ‘Nimbo’ which owing to a fierce gales could not be rescued by lifeboat so a rocket line was fired over to the ship and by means of the lifeline and breeches buoy the crew were safely hauled ashore. Cards size 77 x 52mm

Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Sights of Britain 2nd Series (Large Caption) 1936 Sights of Britain 2nd Series (Large Caption) 1936 M48 - J.A. Pattreiouex Ltd of Manchester, the makers of Senior Service Cigarettes, were noted for specialising in photographic cards during the 1930s, including Sights of Britain 2nd Series. We also see Cutty Sark and HMS Victory. All fine photos backed by highly informative texts, and, as I'm sure you will agree, all worthy choices, the kind of subjects you would expect. Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Dogs and Pets Dogs 1939 Dogs 1939 M48 - This set celebrates dogs in all their different shapes and sizes and was originally issued with ‘Senior Service’ cigarettes. The black and white pictures are first class and there is a brief description of each breed on the back, but there is more as the write-ups also include general hints on handling, raising and feeding puppies (apparently most are partial to a piece of orange and at bedtime leave some food the pup does not much care for such as a stale crust, in case it gets hungry in the night), registering dogs, disease control (disinfect his box with a mixture of eucalyptus and turpentine) etc. Training hints include “never throw a dog into the water to teach him to swim”, “if he tries to go off the pavement jerk him back sharply and scold him” or “if your pup starts yapping say ‘quiet’ and cuff him”. You’d have to be a real dog-hater not to find the puppy pictures adorable and the adult dogs aren’t bad either! Breeds include the Irish Setter, Bull Terrier, Welsh Springer, Cocker & Clumber Spaniels, a Great Dane, Pugs, Pekingese, Saluki, Corgis, Poodles, Westies, Dachshunds, an Alsatian, French Bulldog, Dalmatians, Golden Retrievers and Labradors. Cards size 76 x 51mm.

Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Sights of Britain 3rd Series 1937 Sights of Britain 3rd Series 1937 M48 - This is the third in a series black and white photographs of interesting views and buildings from around the UK and included in this set are the historic old town of Knaresborough, Loch Lomond, Tarr Steps, part of Hadrian’s Wall, Boscastle Harbour, Tintern Abbey, Douglas Head Lighthouse on the Isle of Man, a Broadstairs beach scene, Ely Cathedral, Battle Abbey, Oxford Hight Street, Kenilworth Castle, Margate, Brighton, St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Horseshoe Falls Llangollen, the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, Lord Street in Southport, Belfast City Hall, Lake Windermere and Trevaunance Cove in Cornwall. There are a couple of odd inclusions such as the Manchester Central Library, the Naval College at Dartmouth, the Florence Nightingale memorial in Derby and Chetham’s Hospital School and Library Manchester. The later shows the traditional procession of schoolboys on founder’s day. There are a lot of people too in the Happy Valley, Llundudno picture who are gathered for entertainment in this natural amphitheatre and you can just make out the performers on stage. The pictures are backed by informative text which include the fact that the Plough Inn in Kenilworth was where Harry Williams wrote “It’s a long way to Tipperary” the marching song of Great War troops and we learn that he himself was a victim of the war. This delightful set provides a fascinating glimpse at Britain in the 1930s. Card size 76 x 51mm.

Pattreiouex (Senior Service) Railways British Railways 1938 British Railways 1938 M48 - A look back at the old days of British railways as a golden age and it is easy to see why with this set which was produced in 1938. That year ‘Senior Service Cigarettes’ cost a shilling for twenty and included a free card from this set of 48 which features superb photographs of locos, the travelling post office, a turntable, wind tunnel etc. Among the most dramatic is a photograph titled the ‘Big Five, which pictures five new (in 1938) engines of the ‘Silver Link’ class steamed and ready to haul the Coronation expresses with sound-proofed and air-conditioned coaches. One of these engines 4468 ‘Mallard’ had just set up a new world steam record of 126mph. Other famous expresses include the ‘Flying Scotsman’, the ‘Royal Scot’, the ‘Mancunian’, ‘Torbay Express’ and ‘Golden Arrow’, but the set also includes a camping coach which are parked up at beautiful locations and rented to the public as holiday homes, the train ferry between England and France and a track laying vehicle. You don’t have to be a railway buff to appreciate this classic set which is size 76 x 51mm
