Marcovitch Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards The Story in Red and White 1955 The Story in Red and White 1955 L7 - The London firm of Marcovitch & Co. were taken over by United Kingdom Tobacco Ltd in 1929 and by 1931 were part of the Godfrey Phillips Group. In 1955 they issued a new brand of cigarettes “Red and White”. As part of the promotion of these new cigarettes a series of paper thin advertising inserts written in red on a white background with blank backs was issued. The first of these is an introduction which explains that as a special offer the first of these cigarettes came in an enamelled alloy cover which could be retained to protect future cigarettes. This is followed by an advert headed ‘Three Cheers for Red & White” which explains that the public have taken to the new brand due to high standards and a new manufacturing process. The following five adverts are all numbered and talk you through the reason these are so good and the processes involved. So we learn that they use a new cooler leaf conditioning method, less high-pressure, new air-streamed conditioning to separate the leaf from the stalk, improved filling methods and that these gentler delicately flavoured cigarettes are ideal for “the man who inhales”. A small size of six adverts was also originally produced. These are size 66 x 75mm.

Marcovitch Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Beauties 1932 Beauties 1932 18 - We love these black and white pictures of beautiful women, but as they have no information on the reverse, not even the company’s name, we can’t tell you anything about them. All the cards are numbered on the left bottom corner and some of them may be different pictures of the same women. The majority are head and shoulders images and rather demure, but there are a few racier images (by 1930s standards). A nice set with cards size 66 x 35mm.
