Mister Softees Top 10 1964 (Blue Record Mirror back)
Mister Softees Top 10 1964 (Blue Record Mirror back) EL12 - This excellent set issued by ice cream manufacturers Mister Softee contains excellent colour pictures of pop stars and groups including The Beatles for whom there are two cards, Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, the Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Adam Faith, The Searchers, Billy Fury, The Shadows and Cliff Richard. The backs contain plenty of information about the stars featured and include an acknowledgement to the Record Mirror. As our magazine reviewer back in 1964 said these are enough to make “the older collector sigh for the good old days”. The cards are size 89 x 89mm.

Football
1st Division Football League Club Badges 1972
1st Division Football League Club Badges 1972 M24 - As the title suggests these hexagonal cards feature the club badges of teams from the 1st Division in the 1971/72 season. Football fans might be wondering at this stage why there are 24 cards in this set when there were only 22 teams in the division and the answer is that the other two cards feature the badges of the English and Welsh national sides. Presumably this had to be a set of 24 so they needed to add these two cards. That season Derby topped the league with Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal also in the top 5. Bringing up the rear, so to speak, were Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield who were firmly in the relegation zone. The cards, size 63 x 55mm, contain information about the badge on the reverse. For instance we are told that the fox head on the Leicester City badge illustrates the area’s traditional hunting links and that the Chelsea crest was designed in 1953 and is taken from the arms of the Earl of Cadogan a president of the club.

Mister Softees Top 10 1965 (Win a Big Prize black back)
Mister Softees Top 10 1965 (Win a Big Prize black back) EL12 - Ice cream manufacturers Mister Softee produced a series of pop star sets in association with ‘The Record Mirror’ and this is a fine example. The Stars include the legendary band The Beatles, Essex girl Sandie Shaw who like to sing with her shoes off, the five boy band Manfred Mann, singer and composer Roy Orbison who had hit after hit both here and in the States, R & B singer Dusty Springfield, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, The Bachelors who had hits with “Diane” and “I Believe”, talented performer Adam Faith who also appeared in films and on TV, singer Kathy Kirby who got experience signing with big bands, Liverpudlian Cilla Black who also enjoyed a successful television career, Cliff Richard and the Shadows who also made their mark in films and Billy Fury a favourite singer of the era who bought a racehorse in 1964. All the backs contain a question about the artist and an opportunity to “Win A Big Prize” by completing the sentence “Mister Softee is tops because…” and posting this to their address in London. Apparently prizewinners would be announced on Mister Softee vans. With lovely colour pictures and informative text on the backs what is not to like? Size 89 x 89mm.
