Lavazza (Italy) Lavazza Series 263 Religious Thoughts of Prehistoric Man 1968 Series 263 Religious Thoughts of Prehistoric Man 1968 EL6 - This tells the story of early religious rituals in a series of colour pictures of prehistoric man. Included are cave paintings, rites concerning bears and skulls, burial rituals, ancient monuments and altars and votive offerings including sacrifice. These were issued by Italian coffee company Lavazza in the 1960s and there is Italian text on the backs. Obviously it helps if you can read the language, but we think these cards are sufficiently interesting and the pictures sufficiently self-explanatory that anyone can enjoy them. Lavazza (Italy) Lavazza Series 264 Death of Caesar and The Second Triumvirate 1969 Series 264 Death of Caesar and The Second Triumvirate 1969 EL6 - This is the first of three Italian sets from 1969. This set looks at Roman history beginning with the murder of Caesar and the birth of the second triumvirate. After Caesar’s death there was unrest and turmoil death and infighting between different factions. A new political alliance (the second triumvirate) between Octavian, Mark Anthony and Lepidus was formed which took over complete control of the Roman world after dissenters like the statesman Cicero were murdered. The story is told in colourful pictures with Italian text on the numbered backs. The cards are size 110 x 69mm

Lavazza (Italy) Lavazza Series 265 Arnaldo Da Brescia (12th Century Figure) 1969 Series 265 Arnaldo Da Brescia (12th Century Figure) 1969 - For those of you unfamiliar with this character from Italian history (and let’s face it that is most of us!) Arnaldo Da Brescia was a canon who led a revolt by the people against church corruption. Forced to flee the country he was eventually allowed to return but again he became involved in rebellion against the Poe and ownership of property by the church. This time he was betrayed and captured by forces of the Emperor Frederick Babarossa. The rebellion was put down and Arnaldo was hanged, burnt and his ashes tossed into the Tiber. He is remembered as a reformer with a strong belief that These colourful pictures tell the story and there is text on the back in Italian. The cards are size 110 x 69mm

Lavazza (Italy) Lavazza Series 266 History of Italy Part 1 The End of the Holy Roman Empire in Anagni 1969 Series 266 History of Italy Part 1 The End of the Holy Roman Empire in Anagni 1969 - This set looks at the events taking place in the hilltop town of Anagni to the south east of Rome which for a brief period in the 14th century was the centre of a bitter struggle between the Pope and Kings. The town has been used by Popes for many years and a number of Popes had been born in the town including Pope Boniface VII however his election was contested by French cardinals and a feud with France occurred. The King of France attacked the town and captured and held the Pope for three days. After this the town was no longer used as a residence of Popes. The story is told in colourful pictures with the numbered backs giving details in Italian. The cards are size 110 x 69mm

With rising sea levels and climate change living on stilts may become popular again and in these detailed colour pictures we see how our ancestors constructed, lived and traded from houses which were part of a whole village built on wooden piles over water or boggy ground. We know there was at least one such village as archaeologist have discovered evidence and card number 4 in this series looks at how the watery landscape was ideal for preservation of objects. As always there is plenty of information in Italian on the reverse. An interesingt set for anyone interested in history. The cards are size 110 x 69mm

The backs are full of information in Italian, but even if you don’t speak the language there is plenty here to fascinate. The cards are size 110 x 69mm
