British American Tobacco (without firms name) Reprinted Series Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) Lighthouses 1926 (reprint 2000) 50 - These cards take a look at lighthouses around the British Isles. Some are well-known like those at Dungeness, Spurn Head, Bishop Rock on the Isles of Scilly, Flamborough Head near Scarborough, Smeaton Tower or Eddystone Lighthouse in Plymouth or Corbiere Lighthouse on Jersey, but no matter where they are they have all at some time or another been built to prevent shipping from disaster. When this set was produced many of these structures were still manned and in use and you have to admire the courage of the lighthouse keepers in their lonely structures buffeted by wind and sea. The lighthouses are pictured in colour on the front and the backs give the history, details of the range of its light and fog warning system. This set was also produced by British American Tobacco and by Wills with their ‘Three Castles’ overseas brand. A fascinating set with cards size 67 x 35mm.

The more well-known actresses include Virginia Bruce, Ruth Channing, Lilian Harvey, Ann Sheridan and Eleanor Powell, some of the others include Priscilla Lawson who appeared in the 1936 Flash Gordon film, Nan Grey who starred with John Wayne in ‘Sea Spoilers’ in 1936 and went on to invent a cosmetic mirror for near-sighted women, Pauline Goddard who was the leading lady of Charlie Chaplin in ‘Modern Times’ and real life, plus ‘Wizard of Oz’ baddie Mary Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the West, but is shown here looking altogether more appealing.

However, “Transport” is stretching it as the description for nos. 44 (postman) and 43 (runner of Alfred The Great) who use only their own legs in the course of their duties!. Size 68 x 36mm

British American Tobacco (without firms name) Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Characters From The Works of Charles Dickens (38 different cards from the set of 40 minus Nos. 33 & 39) 1919 Characters From The Works of Charles Dickens (38 different cards from the set of 40 minus Nos. 33 & 39) 1919 38 out of 40 - The novels of Charles Dickens have proved enduring classics often reproduced on TV or film and this set pictures some of the best-known characters in colour caricatures set against a light green background. Included are Mr Bumble the beadle and the brutal Bill Sykes and child criminal The Artful Dodger from ‘Oliver Twist’, Sydney Carton the hero of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’, Nicholas Nickleby who was the lead character in one of Dickens’ most successful novels, the eccentric Mr. Pickwick, Martin Chuzzlewit who’s adventures in America apparently offended readers from that nation, David Copperfield who was apparently the favourite character of Charles Dickens, the tragic Little Nell, Captain Cuttle from ‘Dombey and Son’, Barnaby Rudge and the every cheerful Mr. Micawber who was apparently based on Dickens’ own father. In all there are 38 cards as numbers 33 and 39 are not available. Delightful pictures which the author would surely recognize backed by informative text and card size 68 x 36mm – what more could you want.
