Book Books Glossary of Cartophilic Terms Reference Book Glossary of Cartophilic Terms Reference Book 1 - 40 pages. Reprint, originally published in 1948. Described as a “glossary drawn up for the special use of collectors of cigarette and other trade cards”, this book sets out to provide uniformity for terms in common usage within the hobby. Arranged alphabetically from A to Z, a clear, concise definition is given for each with the intention of standardisation to eliminate looseness in expression. 27 illustrations are included where they enhance understanding of a particular term or expression. In all almost 300 terms are explained from the obvious such as ‘catalogue’ to the obscure such as ‘deckle-edged’ – you could really show you were an ‘advanced collector’ with that one! It’s a fascinating little booklet to dip into.

Book Books The Card Issues of A & BC Chewing Gum Reference Book 2004 Edition The Card Issues of A & BC Chewing Gum Reference Book 2004 Edition 1 - Compiled by I. A Laker 52 pages (3rd Revised Edition 2004) First published in 1981 A & B C produced their first cards in 1953, during a period of more than twenty years they were to become one of the most popular and prolific sources of cards. They issued well over a hundred different series, usually in a large format, and covering a variety of subjects, although football and entertainment were dominant. Several of their series were produced under licence from Topps USA who eventually took over ownership and are still issuing cards today under the Topps name. This booklet is the third revised edition published in 2004. It lists on pages 1 to 40 alphabetically all the series issued by A & BC giving a comprehensive subject-listing where necessary, together with details of varieties, etc. Illustrations have been used where appropriate. On pages 41 to 50 contain new information that has come to light since the original publication in 1981. Also since this was published new information has come to light regarding the actual issuing name. It has long been referred to as American & British Chewing Gum Limited, but in fact new information has established that the actual name was taken from the initials of the actual founders and should in fact be A & B C Chewing Gum Limited.

Book Books The Card Issues of Typhoo Tea Reference Book The Card Issues of Typhoo Tea Reference Book 1 - Published in 1976 with 36 pages. “Typhoo Tea Cards cover a wide span of years dating from early in the century right up to the present day” said Ian Laker in his preface to this book. The present day was in fact 1976, the year in which the firm ended its distinguished card issuing history with The Amazing World of Doctor Who. The heyday of their issues from 1926 to 1938 was marked by distinctive long cards with special offers on the backs, whilst many postwar sets were printed on the sides of the packets – as is evident from the illustratins of seventy cards included in this reference book which groups issues into three main styles – Card Issues, Packet Issues and Extra Large Premium Issues. Many of the card series are “multi-backed”, where each card can be collected with a number of different styles of back, or “vari-backed” where several back designs occur throughout the series but no particular card can be collected in more than one style. This becomes clearer when you look at the listings within the book, which also gives subject titles for unnumbered series. There’s a lot more to Typhoo cards than is obvious at first sight, and this book will be indispensable for collectors wishing to navigate their way through some of the complexities.

Book Books Prophets of Zoom Book Prophets of Zoom Book 1 - Published 2007. An unusual, but fascinating book called Prophets of Zoom, it reproduces the front and back of each card in Mitchell's 1936 series of fifty The World of Tomorrow, opposite which is pictured a modern equivalent – and it's surprising how many of the predictions have become true! From author Alfredo Marcantonio's introduction, we learn that the card set was inspired by a book called 'The World of Tomorrow' and drew upon images from contemporary films, in particular Alexanda Korda's 'Things to Come', as well as inventions then at the cutting edge of technology. The individual predictions range from the amazing to the amusing and together they paint a unique picture of the world we life in now, as pre-war Britain imagined it would be. To take just one example. The very first card informs us that 'coal-mines and oil-wells will not last forever. We shall have to gain the energy we need, not from fuel, but from the inexhaustible forces of nature', and the set forecasts wind turbines, atomic energy and solar motors as being the power sources of the future. From space travel and giant television screens, robots and bullet trains, to London's skyscraper skyline, this is highly entertaining stuff.
